What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

Clients educating themselves on legal issues definitely helps us help them, as it assists them in making reasoned, well thought out decisions.

Are your attorneys willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Yes.

Are your attorneys willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

On a case-by-case basis, depending on the complexity of the issue(s) and the potential client's level of understanding.

Are your attorneys willing to help a client with one discrete part of a case, without taking on the whole case?

As with the previous question, on a case-by-case basis, depending on the complexity of the issue, and how the case lends itself to being parceled.

What are your policies about dividing work among the firm's partners, associates, and paralegals to make the process most cost-effective for the client?

Work distribution is arranged so as to allow legal staff to work on certain matters at a considerably lower billing rate where applicable; more intensive legal tasks are typically assigned to an associate or partner.

How frequently does your firm use mediation, arbitration, or collaborative law to resolve cases?

Very frequently, utilizing both volunteer and professional mediators, as well as parenting counselors and parenting coordinators.

Does your firm provide pro bono legal services or otherwise participate in your community?

Yes – our attorneys work with Volunteer Legal Services Hawaii, the non-profit clearinghouse for pro bono work in the State of Hawaii; Gavin Doi helps coordinate and conduct VLSH’s low-income divorce clinics.

What distinguishes your law firm from others?

We have friendly, down-to-earth attorneys that can speak with people at an understandable level. Cases are handled so as to achieve the client's desired results without costing them excessive amounts.
