Firm Focus
We focus on consumer and business debt matters for individuals, families and small businesses. We help those who have become the victims of unfair debt and collection practices and we also help those who have been inured by the negligence of others.
Firm History
I was admitted to the State Bar of Georgia in June of 1992 and started a solo practice in September of 1993 with a focus on Bankruptcy and Personal Injury cases. In June of 2011, Curtis L. Chronister, Jr. and I joined our practices to form Buff & Chronister, LLC.
Activities and Awards
I have been appointed by the Supreme Court of Georgia as a Mentor for the Transition into Law Practice Program for the State Bar of Georgia.
Example Cases
We recently had a young professional couple come to us who had over 1 million dollars in debt which included both consumer and business debt. This couple had consulted with several other law firms before coming to us. They had been told by the other attorneys that they are ineligible for relief under Chapter 7 of the Bankruptcy Code and that they would have to file for the Chapter 13, which is a repayment plan. After analyzing the situation further, we represented this young couple in a Chapter 7 case and they were able to discharge all of their debt. We also recently handled a product liability case involving a defective vase that shattered and cut our client while our client was handling and washing the vase. After pre-trial litigation, we obtained for our client a six figure settlement.
What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
At Buff & Chronister, we encourage all clients to learn as much as possible with respect to any legal issues they may be facing. Our website offers good information about consumer and business debt matters including Bankruptcy. However, before making any decision that involves a legal matter, we encourage all of our clients to first consult us.
Are your attorneys willing to review documents prepared by clients?
We will review basic legal documents that are prepared by our clients. However, we do not review Bankruptcy petitions, schedules and plans that are prepared pro se. We find that it is more economical for our clients to rely on us to handle the entire case from start to finish including the preparation of Bankruptcy related documents.
Are your attorneys willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
At Buff & Chronister, we are always happy to give clients some advice and counsel before they appear in such forums as the small claims courts. However, we do encourage anyone facing serious legal issues to hire experienced and competent legal counsel.
Are your attorneys willing to help a client with one discrete part of a case, without taking on the whole case?
At Buff & Chronister, we are willing to help a client with a part of a case. We are not asked to do this very often and most of the matters we take on require representation in connection with the entire legal matter.
What are your policies about dividing work among the firm's partners, associates, and paralegals to make the process most cost-effective for the client?
At Buff & Chronister, most of the work is done by an experienced attorney and not a paralegal or first year associate. We do utilize support staff and we do have a nurse on our staff that is instrumental in our personal injury practice.
How frequently does your firm use mediation, arbitration, or collaborative law to resolve cases?
We do frequently use mediation to resolve cases and have found mediation a very valuable tool to assist our clients in resolving disputes quickly and economically. Mediation is a great alternative and it is a way for both sides to focus on settlement and disposition of a legal matter.
Does your firm provide pro bono legal services or otherwise participate in your community?
We are good corporate citizens providing pro bono legal services to those in need.
What distinguishes your law firm from others?
We are a boutique law firm providing high quality legal services to individuals, families and small businesses. Unlike some Bankruptcy firms and Personal Injury firms that take in five hundred or more matters every month, we prefer to handle a smaller number of matters and provide the personal attention that is required to obtain outstanding results for our clients. We find that clients come back to us time and time again and refer their family, friends and co-workers to us. We spend a great deal of time with our clients from the initial consultation to the final disposition of the legal matter and it tends to show in the results we are able to help our clients obtain.
