Why use Nolo to find an attorney?

For decades, Nolo's books, software, and website have been empowering consumers to represent themselves legally, when appropriate. However, there are many situations that call for hiring an expert, and Nolo's Lawyer Directory is an easy-to-use way to find qualified lawyers in your area. The attorneys listed are in good standing, have taken the Nolo Pledge of respectful service, and provide in-depth profiles to help you find a good match.

When do you need a lawyer?

When you have questions that aren't answered by do-it-yourself materials, or you simply want individual advice tailored to your situation, it's time to see a lawyer. Lawyers can give strategic advice, research legal issues and advocate on your behalf. For more information, see our Tips on Working with Lawyers.

How do I find a lawyer who's right for me?

Finding the names of lawyers (and firms) is easy. Just indicate your county or zip code on our Find a Lawyer page, and choose the practice area you're interested in -- bankruptcy, personal injury, or family law, for example. Once you've gotten a few names, read the lawyers' profiles. They will tell you about the lawyer's experience, qualifications, fees, and general philosophy of practicing law. The attorney profiles are intended to give you a feel for whether a lawyer or firm will be a good fit for you. If you like what you see, call the lawyers to set up a first phone conversation or in-person meeting. Then you can make an informed decision about who to hire.

Does Nolo certify the attorneys in its directory?

Nolo does not endorse or certify lawyers who advertise in the directory. We try to provide Nolo customers with more detail than other directories, to help you make an informed decision. We require attorneys in the directory to be in good standing with their local licensing authority when they join the directory, take the Nolo Pledge, and complete all answers in their profiles.

Simply with the lawyer's name and phone number or email address. If the attorney becomes an advertising customer, we'll give you a free Nolo book.
