Initial Consultation

The initial consultation is an opportunity to share your issues and concerns and to learn about your legal rights and options. The initial consultation fee is $250.00, and generally lasts an hour. If you would like to make an appointment, please contact our office.

Legal Fees

The actual cost of your case depends on many factors including whether or not you litigate your case or settle out of court, the number and complexity of your issues and the amount of time involved.

We expect clients to sign a fee agreement and pay an initial retainer before we begin work on a case. We will discuss fees at your initial consultation.

Divorce

Divorce can be a difficult time in an individual's life. There can be emotional difficulties to over come along with the anxiety of dealing with the process of a divorce. Our Firm does the best to make this difficult time easier for you.

Child Custody

Child custody cases can take a toll on a family. Let our firm take care of you and your children's best interests during this difficult time.

When parents separate and they have children, issues regarding where and with whom the child will reside often arise. You, your child and the other parent will benefit the most if both parents can come to an amicable agreement without the expense and stress of going to court. Sometimes, that is just not possible and one party files a complaint for custody and institutes a lawsuit or litigation. If that occurs, a judge has the authority to determine what is in the child's best interest regarding a custodial schedule, regardless of what the parties may want.

Child Support

Child support is very important in order for the parent with legal custody to be able to financially support their child from the disposed marriage. Our firm will do what is right for the child to have the most financial care possible.

Both parents have a legal obligation to support their child financially. This obligation continues until the child turns 18 years old unless the child is still attending high school. If the child is still attending high school then the child support will continue up until age 20 or until the child graduates high school.

There are guidelines to follow in the state of North Carolina for calculating child support. Once this amount is calculated, one parent will pay the monthly child support to the other parent.

There are three different child support worksheets. Worksheet A is used when one parent has primary custody and the other has less than 123 overnights a year with the child. Worksheet B is used when parents have joint physical custody and when one parent has more than 123 overnights a year with the child. Worksheet C is used when the parents have âsplit custodyâ meaning that one child lives primarily with one parent and another child lives primarily with the other parent.

Elizabeth A. Stephenson

Elizabeth A. Stephenson is a native of Cary, North Carolina and is the proud mom of a 10 year old son.

She received her Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.) with honors, from North Carolina State University in 1990 and also holds a Master's Degree in Social Work from East Carolina University (1992). Elizabeth was recognized as the "Outstanding Alumna" from the East Carolina School of Social Work in 2004 and was named a East Carolina University "Centennial Legacy Leader" in 2009.

Prior to attending law school, Elizabeth provided therapeutic services to families and children at Wake County Mental Health. She was also Program Director for Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina and Executive Director of The Covenant With North Carolina's Children.

Elizabeth attended Law School at North Carolina Central University School of Law and graduated with honors in 2000. While in law school she was a Senior Editor of the Law Journal, member of the Trial Advocacy Board, Moot Court Executive Board, and a member of the Trial Advocacy and Moot Court teams where she competed on state and national levels.

Elizabeth was formerly a partner with Atkins & Stephenson, P.A. in Raleigh. She is a member of the North Carolina State Bar, North Carolina Bar Association, North Carolina Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers and member of the Family Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association.
