How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?
John Cooper decided many years ago that personal injury would be his area of specialty. For the past 20 years his practice had been aolmost exclusively concentrated on car accident and railroad accident cases. Jim Hurley specializes in auto accidents. Both attorneys decided to concentrate on the areas they loved working in.
What experience or education distinguishes your lawyers from others
John Cooper and Jim Hurley have very distinguished academic records. Jim was in the top 10 percent of his law school class and John went to the University of Virginia Law School which is one of the top 10 law schools in the country and has been for more than 100. They have both been practising in Norfolk, Virginia Beach and the surrounding cities for decades and are both very specialized in that all they do is injury law.

John Cooper
John Cooper was born and raised in Virginia Beach and Norfolk, VA. He attended school in Virginia Beach. After law school at the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville, VA John returned to his home town in 1988 to work for a federal judge in the U.S. District Court.
For 23 years, John has focused on personal injury claims and lawsuits. He specializes in helping people seriously injured in accidents. His cases include people who have suffered damages and losses in car crashes, truck wrecks, and motorcycle collisions. Other legal areas in which John has significant experience include railroad worker injuries under the FELA law, wrongful death and train crossing accidents.
In 2010, John Cooper handled a truck accident, wrongful death lawsuit which resulted in the largest settlement of a motor vehicle related case in all of Virginia according to the VA Lawyers Weekly newspaper. The $ 3,500,000.00 award went to a child whose father was killed by a truck driver who rear-ended the vehicle in which the young man was a passenger. John uncovered evidence that the dump truck operator had improperly treated diabetes that contributed to his carelessness.

Jim Hurley
Jim Hurley decided to become a lawyer to help people. After receiving an undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona, he graduated from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan in 1990. He received his degree Cum Laude and finished 10th in his class of 143. Jim is licensed to practice law in all appropriate courts.
Jim has practiced law since 1991. Since 1993, he has helped people who have been injured in motor vehicle accidents. Although he has settled many cases for his clients, he has also litigated numerous cases throughout the State of Virginia.

During his long career, Jim has been involved in approximately 100 jury trials as well as hundreds of litigation matters that settled before trial. He spends extensive time with his clients helping them prepare them for trial.

Jim has also tried hundreds of cases in front of various Judges in Virginia, and has argued cases both in State and Federal Court.
