Firm Focus and History
Firm started in 2000 when the principal attorney, who had been president of two prior law firms in Middlebury and Rutland, wanted to establish a small firm that would focus on providing concentrated attention on individual legal work.
General practice focused on helping individuals and small corporations. We perform all kinds of litigation across a wide range of legal matters.
Previous Employment Summary

Board member of Pure Water for the World, Inc. and been active in work in Haiti before and after the earthquake. What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
For the most part, the better educated a client is about their particular legal issue the better able I am to help them because more time is spent working towards a resolution and less in explanation of fundamental points of law. That said, I enjoy working with all types of clients, whether they have educated themselves on legal matters or not.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
I work with my clients as a team and am happy to review anything that a client prepares.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
I have coached clients in the past and have no problem as long as it is clear what the limited responsibility is. We work hard with our clients to minimize the legal costs as much as possible while maintaining the highest caliber of representation.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
I had many people tell me that I had all of the natural skills and ability to be an excellent lawyer. I also was concerned about politics and the laws under which we work. When the time came for me to consider other options for myself, these encouragements lead me to believe that I should study the practice of law.
Before becoming a lawyer in Rutland, I spent many years working as a contractor as well as operating a beef and dairy farm in Middlebury, experiences that motivated me to want to do something more for the people of Vermont. I've been a board member of the Crossroad Arts Council, President of the Friends of the Rutland Free Public Library, and a member of the Rutland City School Board. Once I started practicing law, I served as president to several law firms in the Rutland area and have had the privilege to practice in front of the US Supreme Court.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
I worked in a hospital putting myself through college when I was a pre-med student. All of the science and knowledge about medicine that I gained in school are huge advantages in my personal injury and medical malpractice work. I have also been a carpenter and contractor, so I have actual hands-on knowledge about construction issues that gives me a real understanding of the challenges that face contractors and construction related businesses. I have also run businesses and participated in investment programs that have helped me better understand the tax and the business sides of things. With my background in farming and construction, I am knowledgeable about real estate development and farm issues.
As a small firm with an individual focus, we handle a large range of cases, but we are here to listen to you, evaluate the applicable laws, and keep you informed as we work to resolve your issue.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
It's an area that I have a good deal of experience in as both a practitioner and an attorney so, in that sense, it was familiar territory but it was the desire to help those who are unable to help themselves that really drove my choice of practice areas.
What do you like best about your career?
I am able to combine my life experience and my legal training to help people resolve their issues within the framework that the law allows.
Tell us about your law firm:
I am privileged to work with a group of young and very bright attorneys and a paralegal who handle a full range of cases. In addition, my long-time assistant is indispensable in helping me in a wide variety of areas that enable me to provide the very best representation possible to my clients.
What are your strengths and style?
I analyze issues easily and quickly which enables me to rapidly work to a resolution of whatever legal matter I work on. I am decisive and out going, providing an easy rapport with clients. I care about everyone I represent and they know it. At the end of the day, the quality of representation is only as good as the passion and enthusiasm you have the people you work for and the matters before them.
Personal Interests:
Making a difference. I like making the world a better place. I enjoy sailing, golf, hiking, hunting, and gardening.
