While having litigated thousands of criminal cases over the last 19 years, Mayer Law Office seeks to provide excellent representation to our clients, at fair and reasonable cost. Our detailed focus is upon the aspects of both Family and Criminal Law.

I began my law career in 1992. After spending time in partnership with another attorney, I then began my own law office in 2007.

Example cases

I have represented thousands of people for everything from disorderly conduct to homicide. The case entitled State v Nathan Johnson was a homicide case wherein Mr. Johnson was accused of killing his sister's boyfriend by igniting a fire in a vehicle they were both in. I employed the use of an arson expert at a jury trial to show the fire did not occur in the manner alleged. After a four day jury trial, Mr. Johnson was acquitted. Subsequently, I was given the Hansen Memorial Award for the outcome of this case.

Services Offered For Fixed Fees?

Most of my pricing is based on a flat-fee arrangement. From $225 for a citation, $1,250 to $2,000 for misdemeanors, and $2,500 to $3,500 for most felonies. More serious felonies and/or complicated cases may be negotiated for at an hourly rate.

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

I like to think my primary area of practice, criminal defense, chose me. When I began practicing law, I attempted to practice in all areas. That did not last long. Over a short period of time, it seemed that the greatest flow of new clientele was for criminal and traffic matters. That had much to do with me quickly building a strong reputation as an excellent criminal and traffic defense attorney.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I believe in the credo "two heads are better than one." I feel that there is no more important case to a client than their own case. I appreciate and value their input as I will often have a client who is aware of various legal issues that assist me in successfully defending them.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I will review documents drafted by a client. I often give clients "homework" in the sense that I will encourage them to prepare and provide documents that may be of assistance in defending them.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I will do this under the appropriate circumstances, for example, some traffic matters like simple citations or even minor criminal cases that are not complicated.

William A. Mayer

Prior to the establishment of Mayer Law Office, LLC, I owned and operated, in part, "Best and Mayer, LLC" for approximately ten years. Before that I owned my own firm for about five years.

I think that growing up in a large family (nine children), with fairly strict parents who set the bar very high and expected a high level of achievement, no matter what we did, was the key. My law practice and my attitude is merely an extension of that. My wife and I have been married for 21 years. We got married while I was finishing law school. We deliberately decided not to have children, in part, because of my choice to devote so much time and effort into the practice of law and my clients' needs.

My strengths include what I like to call the "friendly bull-dog approach" to the practice of law. I have cultivated good working relationships with all the people that could have an impact on a client's case, including prosecutors, court-house personnel, corrections personnel, and of course, the judges themselves. I do this, in part, because I truly enjoy working with most of them and I also believe that my clients benefit from this as well. I have built a reputation as a criminal defense attorney who will take the most difficult cases and/or clients. I also have a reputation as an attorney with integrity, having respect for myself, my clients and the judicial process as a whole.

Personal interests:

My personal interests include reading, spending time with my wife and dogs and being outdoors, usually hiking. My wife and I own an RV and travel to various destinations around the United States, usually National Parks. Our favorite is Yellowstone National Park. We have been there many times.
