Firm Overview

My firm was created in 1998 and has continued to operate since that time in Clackamas County, Oregon. Most of my years of experience have been concerned with assisting debtors who need to file bankruptcy, both in Oregon and California. On the business side, I have assisted many clients when they started their own business. In addition, I have represented clients when they purchase or sell an existing business.

Example cases

In California, I was consulted about a matter that was in litigation. It became obvious that the potential client did not need to continue to spend tens of thousands of dollars to continue the litigation because he was going to file bankruptcy anyway. He filed bankruptcy for under $1,000. The other law firm had never discussed any options other than litigation with the client.

Free Initial Consultation?

In some instances I will provide a free consultation for 1/2 hour.

Services Offered For Fixed Fees?

My preference is to use flat fees for most of my work. No one likes to just give a blank check, not knowing what they are signing up for. Bankruptcy cases are flat fee and depend on the issues and complexity of the case. Business entity organizations are also flat fee. Other matters may be hourly at $175 per hour but I try to estimate the range of costs and will agree to seek approval for charges above a given amount.

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

Bankruptcy allows me to provide immediate assistance to someone who is in need. As for the business side of my practice, even before I had graduated from law school, friends were asking me questions about how to set up their businesses. It is work that is directly needed by ordinary people.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

Before I became a lawyer, I used a self-help book to do my own divorce. Personally, I think every citizen should take the first year of law school. Everyone should know more about their rights and obligations under the law. We would all benefit.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

In some cases it is more expensive to have me review word for word client documents instead of using my own documents that I already know what is in them. But, if the client understands that, I am happy to review what they have produced and tell them whether I will undertake the assignment.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

It depends upon the circumstances, but I will discuss the matter with the client and then give them my answer.

Virgilia (Jil) Culver

I operated a law office in Northern California before moving to Oregon.

Living has made me a better lawyer. Having your own troubles, issues, and concerns make a person more sensitive to what is happening to other people. Often I reflect, "There, but for good fortune, go I."

I am caring and sensitive. My job is to try to help the client resolve a difficult situation. I am easy to talk to and like to explain what is going on so the client is prepared.

Personal interests:

Gardening, traveling, puppy training, reading and sewing.
