Firm Focus and History
Stephanie K. Burnham & Associates, Attorneys at Law, PLLC was established on November 15, 2010. Originally a solo-practitioner, I added two talented attorneys for a combined eleven years of experience and formed Burnham & Associates. Licensed in both New Hampshire and Massachusetts, each attorney combines their unique perspectives and excellent skills in collaboration on our clients' legal issues. Our attorneys will listen to your particular circumstances and desired results, explain the possible outcomes, keep you up to date with email, telephone and written correspondence, and choose an approach that is most consistent with how you would like your legal matter handled. In good times and in bad, you can rely on the legal team of Burnham & Associates to protect your legal rights and financial interests. Practice areas include: Bankruptcy, Criminal, Collections, Divorce, Family Law, Immigration, Landlord/Tenant, Litigation, Medicaid, Probate, Real Estate and Small Business.
We pride ourselves on being personal family lawyers. Being a personal family lawyer is different than traditional lawyers because we hope not only to assist our clients with their current legal matter, but we would like to work with them and their family in the future for all of their different legal needs.
In order to serve our clients best, at our first meeting we hope to get to know our clients personally. We will discuss our client's legal issue so that we can begin to understand our client's goals and most important issues. Lastly, we will suggest possible plans that fit those goals and important issues. We welcome any questions that our clients may have about their situation or other legal situations or concerns, so we ask our clients to please bring any questions, information or ideas that they have to our meeting.
We would like to be your legal team.
Previous Employment Summary
I worked as a solo-practitioner for seven years. I then formed a partnership with another attorney where I served as a Senior Partner and Chief Financial Officer. Upon the law firm dissolving, I formed Stephanie K. Burnham & Associates, bringing with me the two talented attorneys from the former law firm.
Activities and Awards
Bono Estate Planning for the Military with the New Hampshire Bar Association.
What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
It is important for clients to understand the legal issues they may be facing. The more research a client does in advance of speaking with an attorney, the more questions the client can bring with them, and the better total picture will be available to the client. Our firm is happy to work with clients who have done no research on their legal issue to clients who have done extensive research on their legal matters.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
Our firm reviews documents prepared by clients routinely. We offer different types of representation, including limited representation, which allows us to review and suggest edits to documents or represent parts of a client's legal matter without formally taking on legal representation of the client's entire legal issue. It is our pleasure to be of service for all levels of legal representation.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
Our firm offers different levels of representation, including limited representation. We are willing to work with clients to the level that they want assistance, and to ensure that the client understands the benefits and detriments of proceeding in any case on their own. Clients who wish only to be counseled are always welcome.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
In high school I took a law class with a very talented teacher. It was my favorite class throughout all four years of high school because every day we learned a new story about a real person and their legal issue. In college I continued studying law, through a Justice Studies Minor, and as a licensed private investigator for the Dover Public Defender's Office. I spent a great deal of time with attorneys listening to their thoughts on cases and interviewing witnesses. I realized that I enjoyed the personal interaction of meeting with clients, hearing their stories and whenever possible assisting them in finding a solution for their legal issues.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
My Bachelor's degree in General Biology allows me to use a scientific approach to legal issues, isolating the problem and then applying theory to resolve the matter. Further, when applying to law school, I spoke with many attorneys and discovered that there was a consensus that Western New England College School of Law produced excellent, well-rounded attorneys.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
I chose my primary areas of practice based on what interested me most in law school and on the need in the community.
What do you like best about your career?
My favorite part of being an attorney is meeting new people and assisting them in resolving their legal issues. It is truly rewarding to have a client thank us after an appointment and tell us that we made it easy to understand their legal issue and their choices.
Tell us about your law firm:
Burnham & Associates is a small elite team of attorneys and staff. There are three attorneys, all licensed in New Hampshire and Massachusetts and all with different practice areas of interest. This allows our legal team to provide a broad range of legal services for each of our clients, and for the attorneys to work together when a client's legal interests may cross different practice areas. The office also has an Office Manager to handle client questions regarding the office and to allow the attorneys to focus on legal work rather than office administration, and a Paralegal who is there to give our clients the personalized attention that they deserve.
What are your strengths and style?
The attorneys here are approachable, experienced and knowledgeable. We use an educational-based approach to assist our clients in understanding the legal issue in front of them, and our experience in showing our clients what possible outcomes arise from their choices of resolution.
Personal Interests:
I enjoy reading, painting, swimming and boating.
