Example Cases
I recently had some clients come to me facing foreclosure and wage garnishment. We determined that they had enough income to save their house with bankruptcy reorganization. The bankruptcy reorganization not only put them back on track with their mortgage payments, but their wage garnishments stopped as well. We were able to eliminate their car payment and get rid of their second mortgage entirely. We've eliminated almost all of their debt except his mortgage and student loan. Their reorganization payment is less than what they were paying on their car loan! These clients are now much happier with their life and able to keep their mortgage current every month.
Another client came to me who had been unemployed for a long time. She was unable to qualify for bankruptcy reorganization because she did not have a source of income at the time. However, we were able to stop all the harassing calls she received from creditors and eliminate the collection law suits she was facing. We also got her out from under a car loan that was too expensive for her. Today, this client lives a much more sustainable lifestyle with a car she purchased outright and is able to pay all her living expenses. She has found employment and is back on track rebuilding her credit and her financial future.

Firm Focus and History
Sara Gillis, P.C. was established in October, 2010. This firm grew out of my strong passion for helping those facing financial crisis in their lives. Having done this sort of work for seven years, I am able to bring a lot of experience to a new practice.
My mission is to provide outstanding value and caring customer service. By keeping my overhead low, I am able to pass along that savings to my clients. Unlike many firms which require mounds of paperwork and make you come to them, my office is paperless and I am willing to travel to a location convenient for you.
Previous Employment Summary
I started doing bankruptcy work in 2004, and estimate that to date I have prepared approximately 1,000 cases. Working my way through law school as a bankruptcy paralegal in some of Colorado's top bankruptcy firms, I have done every job in a law office. I am lucky that some of the best bankruptcy lawyers in Colorado trained me in the practical aspects of this field.
What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
Clients educating themselves can be wonderful. However, I have found that sometimes clients misunderstand the law pertaining to their case, so it's probably best for clients to verify the information they learned with their attorney. A good attorney is also a good educator and should strive to keep clients in the know at all times.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
While I will not coach a non-client or assist with document preparation, I do review documents such as wills, contracts, and real estate closing documents.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
Coaching people who represent themselves is potentially a violation of the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct, so I do not do it.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
I was always curious about what lawyers did, so I decided to work as a paralegal. While I was a paralegal, I realized that I could do what lawyers do. The rest is history.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
A major difference between me and other attorneys is that I understand the human angle of the bankruptcy process. I won't treat you like a deadbeat or attempt to embarrass you like other attorneys sometimes do. I have been there and know what's going on. The fears, the pain, the humiliation - none of these things go away overnight. I am able to empathize with my clients in a way that is rare for bankruptcy attorneys.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
Helping those in financial crisis is my way of paying forward the kindness I was shown at a difficult time in my life.
What do you like best about your career?
This work is extremely emotionally rewarding. When clients seek bankruptcy help, they are often worn out, worried, and depressed. They feel that their life is over. By working with them through the bankruptcy process, I am able to help get their lives back on track.
Tell us about your law firm:
I am a solo practitioner, so all of my clients deal directly with me, not a paralegal.
What are your strengths and style?
I offer representation that is no-frills and affordable. I don't like to waste time on unnecessary things. I get straight to the point. I also offer some of the fastest case preparation in the business - often as little as one business day. The thing that sets me apart from my competition is 1) my superior training; 2) my quick and accurate case preparation; and 3) I travel to many parts of Colorado to undertake your representation.
Personal Interests:
I sit on the Board of Directors for a Denver-based non-profit, Friends of Gueoul. Our organization gives scholarships to young girls in Senegal, encouraging literacy and social development through education. I enjoy home improvement, learning about foreign cultures, watching Bollywood films, dancing, and spending time with family, friends, and pets.
