Continuing Education

I regularly attend continuing legal education seminars and classes on personal injury law, depositions, trial practice, and similar areas.

Example Cases

I recently handled a premises liability case in which the client was injured by snow falling from a three-story roof. The client suffered significant spine injuries as well as psychological issues from the accident. The client received a settlement large enough to enable him to receive the treatment he needed.

In another recent case, stemming from an automobile accident, the client's medical expenses exceeded $13,000 and the insurance company offered $7,000 to settle the case. The case had several complicating factors, including another accident only ten days before the accident in this case. We proceeded to arbitration and obtained an award more than double what the insurance company said was their best possible offer.

One client was injured when he was attacked by a dog. Although his medical expenses were relatively small, we were able to obtain enough for the client to obtain scar revision surgery (a very expensive procedure) as soon as his wounds had finished healing.

Firm Focus and History

I handle personal injury cases. Have you been injured in an accident? If so, call me. I can help you with automobile accidents; car-bicycle accidents; motorcycle accidents; dog bites; slip and fall accidents; soft-tissue injuries from your accident; neck, back, and shoulder injuries; and numbness, tingling, and shooting pain in your extremities.

I also help you deal with the complexities of insurance. The insurance companies make it much harder to recover from your injuries. They like it when you try to handle your case on your own, because they know you'll accept less than what the case is worth.

My law office was established in June, 2006. Prior to opening my own office, I worked in Alaska. My work there was primarily insurance defense; working for insurance companies, their clients, and the insured. My experience in that practice made me realize how much help an injured person needs after an accident.

Since 2006, I have handled numerous injury cases, including car accidents, bicycle accidents, dog bites, premises liability (including slip and falls), and other types of accidents.

Previous Employment Summary

From June 2003 to June 2006 I worked for the firm, Richmond & Quinn in Anchorage, Alaska. I primarily handled insurance defense, defense of accident cases, defense of insurance bad faith, and other cases.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I believe that knowledge is power. A person involved in a legal dispute should do whatever he or she can do to understand the legal system. However, there will come a point, especially in an accident/injury case, where the client's knowledge will not be enough to help them. At that point I encourage them to seek professional assistance to make sure they receive full compensation for their injuries.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I will review documents prepared by clients for a small fee (generally equivalent to a couple of hours at my regular hourly rate).

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I can provide limited coaching for simple cases. However, I strongly believe that being represented by an attorney will save time and money in the long run, because it helps eliminate mistakes. I spend a significant amount of my divorce practice helping people fix what they did without an attorney.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I enjoy solving problems and helping people. I realized going to law school would be a good way to do what I enjoy.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

Before I went to law school I worked in the banking industry; mostly in banking operations. I learned how finances work, but most importantly I learned how to use technology to help people. Now I put those skills to work in keeping my law practice lean and efficient.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I chose to work in Personal Injury because it's the most interesting area of the law. In my practice, I spend significant time learning about different injuries and different physiological systems. I find the challenge of understanding complicated medical issues very exciting; especially when combined with complex legal issues.

What do you like best about your career?

I practice as a solo attorney. That means I can screen my cases and make sure I only choose cases I am willing to work on, and clients who I can stand behind. I like the opportunity to meet people and help them solve their problems, while maintaining a very high level of integrity and old-fashioned "customer service."

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a solo practitioner and I deal directly with my clients. When the phone rings, I am the one who answers it. I believe this gives me a lot more flexibility than other, larger firms; it gives me the freedom to look at many different kinds of cases, and explore creative or alternative solutions to legal problems.

What are your strengths and style?

I believe I combine tough negotiation strategy with willingness to proceed through litigation. I work closely with my clients and communicate frequently about all aspects of the case. I offer a level of personalized service that cannot be beat.

Personal Interests:

I am interested in everything. Science, law, politics, political theory, and science fiction. I find it all fascinating.

Fixed-Price Services and Fees

I offer a free initial consultation for personal injury clients. Personal injury cases are handled on a contingency basis, meaning there is no attorney fee unless we collect.

For non-injury litigation cases, such as divorce cases, my hourly rate is $175. Mention Nolo and receive a $25 hourly discount.

Hourly Rates

Depends on the case; personal injury cases are handled on a contingent-fee basis.

Free Initial Consultation?

Personal injury cases have a free initial consultation. For all other cases, I offer a free 15-minute consultation, during which we discuss the nature of the case, my attorney fee, and the necessary retainer. After the first 15 minutes, if you wish to obtain actual advice (such as what actions should be taken, my opinion about the merits of your case, and any other opinions requiring me to apply the facts of your case to my knowledge of the law) I charge a fee of $150. If you mention Nolo I will reduce the charge to $100 and deduct $100 from your first invoice. That means you receive the benefit of my advice, and then receive a discount after you've retained me to represent you.

Typical Retainer

My retainer is based on my view of the complexity and difficulty of your case. A simple case will have a lower retainer, a more difficult or complex case will have a higher retainer.

A personal injury case does not require a retainer as those kinds of cases are handled on a contingent fee basis.

Understanding Fees

Nolo's Licensing Check

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the state agency that licenses lawyers upon joining the directory.

Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any state licensing agency.
