Example Cases
We have filed a Chapter 13 bankruptcy for a local businessman who was facing numerous lawsuits and the threat of foreclosure. We were able help him keep his business and all of the assets he wanted, including his home and place of business, while working out suitable arrangements with his creditors.
We frequently file individuals in bankruptcy who are then able to keep the property they need and can afford while eliminating debt.
For social security cases we have represented individuals before the Social Security Administration and Federal Courts who have been denied claims for Social Security Benefits and Supplemental Security Income.

Firm Focus and History
We primarily represent consumers and small businesses. We focus on bankruptcy protection and social security disability representation.
The firm began in 1981 and has been housed at its present location at 37 Green Street in Augusta since 1984. Although we previously had a more general focus, over the years our primary work has narrowed and is now concentrated in bankruptcy and social security representation. We continue to have small practices in other areas of the law.
Previous Employment Summary
When I graduated from law school I received a Reginald Heber Smith Community Lawyer Fellowship and worked with Pine Tree Legal Assistance in Augusta for two years. Since then, I have been working at my current firm.
Activities and Awards
I presently serve as a member of the Local Rules Committee of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maine and the Maine Judicial Branch Commission on Foreclosure Diversion.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
I believe that in some situations clients may adequately represent themselves. Two problems frequently arise, however. One problem is knowledge, but this may be overcome, in some situations, with study. The other is judgment and experience. There are times when people are better served by having an attorney who can help them make good decisions.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
We do this frequently but only in our areas of expertise.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
We will coach clients but only when we agree that it is in the client's best interests.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
I always felt that meeting new people and being asked to use my skill and judgment to help them improve their lives would be a most wonderful way to spend a professional career.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
I've been a lawyer for over 30 years, more than one-half of my life. At this point there really is no way to separate my legal career from my life experience. Indeed, my work as a lawyer along with my family is my life experience. I appreciate every day that I can come to work and find it a privilege to do so.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
Our economic system is harsh. The practice of consumer bankruptcy law allows me to use my professional skills, experience and judgment to help people improve their lives while facing, at times, extraordinary stress.
What do you like best about your career?
I believe that I am blessed and most fortunate to be able to do what I do. My career has offered me a way to help people often when they are in great need. I am able to meet new people all the time (my clients) and I am able to work with extraordinary people every day (my staff).
Tell us about your law firm:
Ours is a two lawyer firm but we are far more than just that. I like to say we have employees here from the teens to the seventies with someone filling a slot for each decade in between. That makes it an interesting and fun place to work. We have a number of paralegals and office assistants to help us get through the day and to help our clients successfully complete their cases. They are all remarkably experienced and able at what they do.
What are your strengths and style?
I have always been able to communicate well with people - clients and other lawyers - and explain the difficult connection between the law and one's life. I have 30 years of experience, and this helps, and with it comes good judgment. I have a good sense of humor which, I believe, is helpful in dealing with life's difficulties.
Personal Interests:
I am happily married to a wonderful woman and have three children, two of whom are in college with one still in high school. I play tennis, enjoy kayaking, and am a gardening enthusiast. Once a month, I lead a group of teens at a religious school. I love to read and am a Boston sports fan at heart.
