Firm Focus and History
My current law practice was established in 1991, after my previous law partner retired from the practice of law. I have been at my current location since 1995.
My firm's primary focus is on estate planning, probate and trust matters, including revocable and irrevocable trusts, wills, powers of attorney and health care directives. I pioneered affordable estate planning that includes a client guide, and easy-to-use methods that allow clients to provide the information needed and custom tailor their documents.
My estate planning clients can work entirely over the internet, making it easy for those who cannot come to my office because of distance, work schedules or other issues.
I also handle probate cases and estate litigation, which gives me a broader insight into drafting enforceable estate documents and helps me to avoid challenges. With a background in both litigation and drafting documents, I also effectively represent clients who are facing estate litigation, palimony cases and related matters.
My background in family law provides the experience needed to help clients draft effective premarital agreements.
My commitment is to make quality, affordable legal services available to every Californian.
Previous Employment Summary
My first employment out of law school I was hired by Robert Kennedy to work with the U.S. Department of Justice, Criminal Division, in Washington D.C. I then was selected as Assistant to the Director of the at-the-time-new agency, which became the Law Enforcement Assistance office, designed to reform the criminal justice system.
After that, I taught law school at the Golden Gate College Law School, and finally I established a private law practice.
After several years, I saw that my dream of making legal services accessible to the general public was being realized by the Jacoby & Meyers Clinics. I joined them and served for several years as their Director of Legal Services. With the change of their focus and organization I returned to private practice, refining the ideas I had developed there for practical application with my clients.
Activities and Awards
Judge Pro-Tem, Municipal Court, Santa Monica. I have done considerable pro bono work for various organizations.
What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
I prefer all my clients to be fully informed about the legal issues involved in their matter. My estate planning clients are given a guide summarizing the law in the field. We then go over each document so that all decisions are made knowingly and not merely because "my attorney told me to."
In every aspect of any case, my clients are fully informed of the issues, possible outcomes and risks involved. I feel an informed client is essential to professional and effective representation.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
I am willing to review client prepared documents at my regular hourly fee.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
I have coached many clients who choose to represent themselves and continue to be available for that purpose.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
I decided to become a lawyer out of the conviction that my success in life is measured by how many people I have helped live a better life. I believe that being an attorney is a sacred trust, requiring the highest dedication to principle and to a client's interests.
I am profoundly dedicated to ethical representation of my clients and will not accept clients who ask anything less of me. It is an attorney's job to vigorously represent the client's interests, but never should that lead to evading ethical rules or professional conduct.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
I have lived a rich, diverse life that has provided me with an unusually broad insight into the human experience. Law school only teaches prospective lawyers the "language" of the law. A good lawyer is made by world experience.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
After years of a very diverse practice I decided that as the complexity of the law increased my clients deserved an attorney focused on a specific field of law. Estate planning and probate and trust matters provided me with the opportunity I seek to serve my clients.
What do you like best about your career?
I have immensely enjoyed being an attorney. I am honored to be of service to not only my clients but to the principles of justice.
Tell us about your law firm:
I am a solo practitioner and all of my clients deal only with me. Every document has been hand crafted by me utilizing the latest legal technology.
What are your strengths and style?
My strengths are that I am able to focus on my client's needs and not my own ego. This enables me to be both tenacious and focused in litigation, and to always search for ways to minimize conflict and reach the best results for my client.
In all matters I am direct, open and honest. My clients always get the benefit of my laser-like focus and frank advice. The principles that guide my practice are:
Prompt, Honest Communication
Your calls will be returned promptly. I will keep you informed of what is happening in your matter. I will tell you the truth and will ask that you do the same. You can always talk to me about anything that concerns you.
