Continuing Education

I attend continuing legal education seminars on the topics of Bankruptcy and Family Law. I stay current on the laws that impact my clients so they will get the best service possible. It is interesting how closely family law and bankruptcy interact with each other.

Papers and Publications

I have published some articles in a local magazine. Copies of these articles can be found on my website www.paulbensonlaw.com.

Example Cases

A single lady who was behind on her house payments and severely in debt came to my office. We worked on a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy and directly with her mortgage company. She is still living in her home and in a much better financial position than before we met.

A retired couple on a fixed income had too much unpaid debt. We worked on a Chapter 7 and their debt was discharged. They are still living in their home and very relieved not to have the collectors calling every day!

Firm Focus and History

The Law Office of Paul Benson focuses its practice to Bankruptcy, typically Chapter 7 and 13 cases, and Family Law cases that include divorce, custody, parentage, and adoption.

I opened my office in 2007 in Ogden after graduating from law school and I opened my second office in the Salt Lake Area in 2009.

Previous Employment Summary

My previous employment was not satisfying, but it did inspire me to go to law school. I've been working hard to help people ever since!

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I think it is great when clients educate themselves on the law and how it impacts their lives. Educated clients can often make good decisions and don't have unreal expectations on what happens. Well-informed clients will help us work better as a team to complete the bankruptcy with good results.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

This is not a good idea as it may create an improper client relationship that can get everyone in trouble. Due to the complexity of the bankruptcy code not being completely involved in the client's case from the beginning to the end will put the clients at a disadvantage.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

Due to the complexity of the bankruptcy code not being completely involved in the client's case from the beginning to the end will put the clients at a disadvantage. I would not recommend doing a bankruptcy by yourself because there are often local rules or customs that maybe not be included in self help books.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I like to help people who are in difficult positions and help people get control of their lives again.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I worked as a late night custodian to help pay the bills while attending college. I did not make much money then and things were tight. I find this helps me relate to more of my clients who are just barely making it.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I find it fascinating that people can get a fresh start and be free from their debts. This can be a great benefit to people who have found themselves in an uphill battle do to no fault of their own.

What do you like best about your career?

I like the interaction I get when I meet all types of people. I like to hear what is going on in my client's life so I can properly advise them and let them know what their options are.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a solo practitioner, so I handle all my cases from beginning to end.

What are your strengths and style?

I feel my strengths in practicing law are my patience and my ability to help put people at ease who are facing difficult situations. I like to encourage people and help them achieve their full potential.

Personal Interests:

My personal interests include being with my family talking with my friends and relaxing and watching TV. My favorite shows are Seinfeld, baseball, and football.
