Firm Focus and History
First and foremost, we believe in serving our clients' needs and employing the latest in legal technology to support those needs. We are here to help you secure your financial future and preserve your family's legacy with contemporary online estate and trust planning, and small business organization and succession planning services.
I practiced in Westport, Connecticut from 1978 to 1991. Since then, I have continued to practice in Illinois in my Wheaton office, advising commercial organizations, corporate executives and business owners on organizational structure, policies and procedures (corporations, general and limited partnerships, joint ventures, governance and ethics), transactions including acquisitions, sales, leasing and licensing of products and services, real estate, trademarks and copyrights, and information technology, marketing and advertising, and high income/high net worth individuals on tax, financial, estate and investment planning matters.
I have acted as special counsel to banks, financial and health service companies, securities and life and health insurance, real estate and investments, and deregulation of financial services industry (banking, securities, insurance). I was appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce as member for five years of Connecticut District Export Committee, which originated the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award program. I advised the General Counsel of Senate Subcommittee for International Finance on development of Export Services Act and testified before Congress on this legislation that amended the Glass Steagall Act to permit bank holding companies for the first time to own a non-banking business. I was then also an advisor to Senate Small Business Committee and Small Business Administration on export trade and small business financing laws and regulation. As representative for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Committee and in collaboration with the American Banking Association, I worked with the Small Business Administration, Comptroller of Currency and Federal Reserve to develop supporting legislation.
Previous Employment Summary
My work with organizations includes National Director of Planned Gifts - Alzheimer's Association in Chicago, IL. I oversaw planned gifts development, estates administration, legal case management, marketing and communications, Founders Society and charitable gift annuity operations and services.
I was also Assistant General Counsel to Rotary International Association (RI), advising directors, trustees and senior management of this 501(C)(4) association which had approximately 32,000 member clubs and 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide. As acting general counsel for Rotary Foundation, I supported the Trustees on governance matters and formulation of foundation policies and procedures, and oversaw the legal affairs of its various divisions (Programs, Scholarships, Fund Development, Finance and Investments). I oversaw the legal affairs of RI Meetings and Conferences, Human Resources and MIS divisions, real estate and buildings management operations, intellectual property rights (trademarks, sponsor licensing transactions, and copyrights), and matters in litigation.
Previous to that, I was Vice President and Senior International Counsel at Pullman Inc., a Fortune 500 corporation. There, I directed marketing and sales operations for large, complex civil and energy engineering and construction projects worldwide. I established European, Eastern European, Middle East and Central and South American marketing and sales operations, negotiating large dollar contracts, new business ventures, acquisitions and mergers, foreign trade agreements and long-term commercial agreements and operating licenses with various national and quasi-governmental agencies.
What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
I am a firm believer that an educated client is a better client, because they discover how difficult and complex the law can be and develop a much better appreciation of their legal and other professional advisors work on their behalf.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
I am happy to review documents prepared by clients, subject to advance mutual agreement establishing the limits to the scope of and results expected from such review.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
I am willing to coach clients who prefer to represent themselves, subject to advance mutual agreement establishing the limits to the scope of and results expected from such coaching.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
I decided on a legal career as a way to help people who needed good legal advice and support in their personal and business lives.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
I have always worked for and with companies engaged in creative and productive new ventures, as well as people who were concerned with advancing their and their family's personal and financial well-being in positive ethical ways.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
The areas of law in which I practice are those in which people need good legal advice and support to ensure they and their families can lead secure, happy, productive and rewarding lives.
What do you like best about your career?
What I like most about being an attorney is that it gives me the opportunity to help people who have a real problem and need someone who has the skills and experience to guide them kindly and quickly to a workable solution to that problem. It's a great feeling for me to be able to help them resolve that problem and mentally put it to rest.
Tell us about your law firm:
As a solo practitioner, I find myself working closely and confidentially with my clients, and have expected my employees to do likewise, working with clients in a fair and straightforward manner regardless of the circumstances.
What are your strengths and style?
Clients often first come to my office with negative opinions regarding their legal situation and the fact that they may need a lawyer's opinion and assistance. I always take pains, in as personable a way as possible and in a spirit of hope and optimism, to fully prepare and educate my clients on how their lives (and those of their families and/or business associates) could be affected by the law in regards to their specific case needs and interests. Where possible, I try to put them at ease by explaining, in plain terms, how I work, the kind of close working relationship that the can expect to enjoy in working with me to find good solutions to their problem(s). And of course, I fully review in advance with them what they can expect regarding my fees and billing practices.
Personal Interests:
I enjoy playing the piano, listening to jazz, blues, country and classical music, and composing music. My wife and I are avid gardeners and love to work outdoors in our gardens, enjoying God's great gifts in nature, like the beauty and wonderful scent of flowers and listening to the many sounds of birds singing in the woods that surround our house and gardens.
