Previous Employment Summary
Prior to being a partner with Goldstein and Bashner I was associated with some of the busiest personal injury firms in New York. Additionally, I have had experience in other firms in managing medical malpractice cases.
Activities and Awards
I currently serve on the Board of Directors for the New York State Academy of Trial Lawyers and am a member of the American Association for Justice. I have a 9.7 rating with Avvo (superb) and the firm has been involved in a number of philanthropic causes on Long Island.
What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
I strongly believe in clients empowering themselves by understanding the legal process and their legal rights. We try our best to educate each and every client about their case, helping them to understand the good and the bad and what they need to do to be an informed client. We give out FREE reports to clients that explain some of the most common concerns and issues.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
We will always try and help a client do whatever is necessary to understand documents they prepare themselves.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
While we don't coach clients who want to represent themselves, we do offer a number of helpful free reports as well as other resources on our website including informative articles, blogs, checklists and legal forms.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
I came from a background where I had to advocate for my mother who was disabled. I know firsthand what it's like to have a disability that crushes the stability of the family unit. I felt that I could use those skills in helping victims of accidents. Most lawyers don't understand what their clients go through. They don't have the patience to really talk to their client. I think that's where we are different. In fact, we have been criticized by many of our peers because we spend too much time with our clients. We think it's worth it.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
Having grown up with a member of my family who had a chronic illness and was wheelchair bound makes me more sympathetic and understanding to those with serious injuries.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
Unlike corporate law, I go into the courtroom. I am not stuck in an office reading contracts that are 500 pages long. My clients are not executives. They are the elderly, union workers, babies, kids, poor people, single mothers, immigrants, undocumented workers.
What do you like best about your career?
Each day is different; each case and client is different. I am happy that my job is not boring. Additionally, there is a tremendous amount of satisfaction in helping out a part of someone's life that has been adversely affected by an accident.
Tell us about your law firm:
My partner Robert Bashner and I work well together. We have been close friends for a long time and that has made the work place environment an even better place. We have a small staff of very dedicated people who are always willing to extend themselves to our clients.
What are your strengths and style?
I have been told by my clients that they feel very comfortable with me. When I talk, I try to make sure it's never "at them" it's always "to them." Most of my clients have invited me to their homes and have told me about their families. My style is easy going. It takes a tremendous amount of strength to be able to talk to all kinds of people without anybody feeling uncomfortable.
Personal Interests:
I love to travel. I have visited most of this country and have traveled to many other countries. I have a great family and enjoy my time with them. I also love all kinds of music, from jazz to classic rock.
