Firm Focus and History

At the Law Office of Mike Rothman, our focus is on the client and his or her goals for the representation. Our goal is to fully involve the client in his or her defense. Trial can be a confusing and disorienting process for an individual who finds himself or herself charged with a crime. We strive to put the client in the driver's seat by informing him or her of the charges they face, the potential outcomes, and then making the best decisions based on the best available information. No case is too difficult, no situation is too hopeless. The key is to be an informed legal consumer.

I opened my doors for business as a sole-practitioner in 2002. I had previously been an associate in the litigation department of a large Washington, DC law firm. However, this job gave me no real experience helping people. I loved the courtroom and I loved solving problems for clients. Now, I handle the cases I love, and I can see the benefits of my work first hand. We have had great success this past year in defending our clients. As always, the firm's success depends upon a client's active participation in his or her defense. We take the time to listen to our clients. That is why our firm has a reputation for delivering high-quality service to satisfied clients.

Previous Employment Summary

Previously, I worked at a large Washington, DC law firm in the litigation division and the white collar crime division. Prior to working at the firm, I worked as a clerk at the United States Department of Justice's Office of Consumer Litigation and as a clerk at the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Maryland, Northern Division (Baltimore). Prior to my work in law, I worked on Capitol Hill for a Congressman from California, worked at the General Services Administration ("GSA") as a public affairs and congressional liaison, and received a Masters Degree in Public Administration (in addition to my law degree).

Activities and Awards

Graduated from University of Maryland School of Law (with Honors);
Received an award for outstanding legal writing in my case note which was subsequently published, "It's a Small World After All: Personal Jurisdiction and the Internet";
Bryce Harlow Scholar (Masters Program Scholarship Winner);
Recent Continuing Legal Education (CLE) for the Montgomery County Bar Association, "Social Networking: Sword or Shield?").

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I expect clients to educate themselves on the charges they face and to ask me questions about their representation. Clients need to take an active role in their representation in order to achieve the best results. A client cannot expect a great result if he or she does not provide some guidelines for the representation. My law office welcomes input from the client. The more you know, the better your defense.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I frequently ask clients to prepare chronologies or summarize long, but valuable documents. I do not review legal documents prepared by clients.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

Not much. I prefer to be responsible for my own work.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I decided to become a criminal defense lawyer because the subject matter was so exciting, I felt like I was making a difference, and I could see the people I helped. Working with people who are in a very difficult time in their life and helping them through it is so rewarding.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I worked as a campaign manager for a candidate running for United States Congress in the State of Georgia in 1992. I went door-to-door attempting to convince people that my candidate was the best for the job. While we lost in the runoff election, I never forgot the importance of connecting with people. Hope is a powerful thing. To be able to deliver on a promise was something I never forgot.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I find criminal defense to be fascinating. The constitution provides so much freedom to individuals from governmental intrusion. Using the law, the constitution, and the judicial system to serve the people and the interests of justice challenges me every day. I know people's rights are always at stake in court, so taking my job for granted is never an option.

What do you like best about your career?

I get to help people through difficult situations in their lives, I get to make arguments to judges and juries about why my client should not be found guilty or punished for an offense, and I get to make arguments about the changing nature of our society. As the mediums of communication change (e.g., the internet, email, twitter, etc.), the crimes morph with it. Criminal defense is a current and cutting edge discipline. As society changes, so do society's visions of crime.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a solo practitioner, so all my clients know me and deal directly with me. I have a wonderful assistant, Amanda, who is attentive to all my client's needs and serves as my representative when I am in court. The previous compliments from my clients speak for themselves.

What are your strengths and style?

My strengths are my ability to think on my feet and prevail in court. I am a very creative thinker who listens to my clients. My strength is my ability to listen to a client and devise a strategy to meet the client's goals, given the confines of the situation.

Personal Interests:

I love hiking, camping, and most outdoor sports.
