Continuing Education

I've taught continuing legal education seminars on ethics, interviewing clients, supporting documentation for bankruptcy cases, the nuts and bolts of bankruptcy, jury selection, premises liability injury claims, and legal issues for the medical community. I attend continuing legal education on insurance litigation, civil trials, personal injury, and bankruptcy.

Example Cases

• The outcomes that stand out in my mind are the times where marriages have been saved. On a number of occasions I have had clients that were planning on a divorce; they just wanted to file a joint bankruptcy first so both are starting-over debt-free. However, once their financial burden has been lifted, there commonly is less to fight about, and many of the couples change their minds about the divorce.

• I also enjoy hearing the stories after filing about my clients' health improving. The stress reduction allows them to sleep soundly again, and they are no longer bombarded with phone calls they don't want to answer. Returning people to normal is a satisfying aspect of my profession.

Firm Focus and History

After representing working families for 12 years while at another firm, I founded The Barrett Law Firm the first half of 2008. In 2011 we merged with Nemeth & Associates to become Nemeth & Barrett, LLC.

Nemeth & Associates concentrates on helping families struggling with injuries and bankruptcies through the tough times. We offer free consultations, personal attention and a determined voice. Although we have represented clients throughout the entire state of Ohio, most of our clients are located in Lorain and Cuyahoga counties.

Previous Employment Summary

During undergraduate studies in the 1980s, I was an investigator and clerk for a personal injury law firm. In 1989, I became a bodily injury claims representative for State Farm Insurance. I left State Farm at the end of 1993 to go to law school. During law school, I returned to investigating and clerking at a law firm. After graduating law school in 1996, I became an associate attorney and a partner. In 2008, I left that firm and started The Barrett Law Firm.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I point many of my callers in the right direction so they can handle their case on their own. If hiring an attorney is not going to add more value to the claim than the cost of the attorney, I recommend clients educate themselves and handle the claim on their own.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I do this regularly.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I do this regularly.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

To help people.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I have been helping families for many years in addition to having my own family.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

It is rewarding to be able to allow people to get a fresh start.

What do you like best about your career?

Helping people.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a solo practitioner. My wife of 20 years is my receptionist (she was my wife before she was my receptionist!). Our book keeper is Valerie. All of my clients deal directly with me.

What are your strengths and style?

My strength is my personal style. I don't judge. When we both agree to be attorney-client, the client gets me all the way through. I've also argued cases at every level of state court when the offer cannot be negotiated - from Municipal Court to the Supreme Court. I believe in my clients and treat them how I would want to be treated.

Personal Interests:

I spend most of my free time at my children's activities. I have four children involved in soccer and school. We all like to go camping when we have available time.

Understanding Fees

Nolo's Licensing Check

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the state agency that licenses lawyers upon joining the directory.

Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any state licensing agency.
