Legal Topic
Bankruptcy
Preferred New Clients
Bankruptcy: I prefer to assist consumers or small business owners who are need in bankruptcy services - either 7 (liquidation) or 13 (restructuring).
Debt Relief: I like helping people who hope to avoid bankruptcy to gain control of their debts, including issues regarding foreclosure and debt restructuring.
Sometimes I'm asked how labor law and debt management work together since the fields seem so diverse. It is pretty simple. People with employment issues often have problems meeting their debt obligations.

Example Cases
Represented an individual who owed a large debt to the Treasury of the State of Massachusetts and who had an bench warrant for arrest over the issue. Resolved the debt through negotiation and had the charges dismissed upon payment. This person also had a child support case I resolved by demonstrating the state did not have jurisdiction.
Represented a consignor against an international bank in a bankruptcy action where the bank claimed the goods of the bankrupt consignee as store stock. We successfully argued under the Uniform Commercial Code that the bank knew or should have known these were consigned goods. The client was able to reclaim all the consigned goods.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
An educated client understands more about processes and what can and cannot be done through the legal system. In fact, some clients become legal sleuths and greatly enhance their cases because they know details they forget to tell their lawyer and have "aha" moments during their studies.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
Absolutely. I view my role in this process as analyzing and improving on the document that is eventually filed and considered by the court.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
I'm happy to coach someone in representing themselves in simple legal matters. However, in complex cases my advice is likely to be considering retaining counsel - if not me, then someone else.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
Having helped people make positive life changes for almost two decades in the social work arena, I view law as a different method of helping people address needs or solve problems.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
All of it. The social work, the writing, and all my combined experiences including creating cutting edge memorandums of law for the Chief Justice of Probate and Family Court during a two-semester judicial internship, working at Lawyer for the Day in another internship, working in Internet Research in high tech and later for Westlaw all contribute to the skills I bring to the table.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
My practice evolved over time. I grew passionate about Labor Law while working for a union. In private practice I found that employment problems and debt problems usually went hand in hand.
What do you like best about your career?
Helping people resolve problems.
Tell us about your law firm:
I am a solo practitioner so all of my clients deal primarily with me. I do collaborate with other lawyers and service providers who help me provide high quality services.
What are your strengths and style?
I'm personable, yet assertive, a negotiator who is also a zealous advocate.
My strengths include being a troubleshooter who identifies strengths and weaknesses in cases - theirs and yours - so they can be addressed.
Personal Interests:
American Sign Language - and I don't devote nearly enough time to my receptive skills. Also, nature photography (mostly landscapes), reading everything from pop physics to mystery, walking the dog and writing.
