Firm Focus and History
The Bankruptcy Law Office was established in October 1991, and was designed from its inception to be a firm which concentrated exclusively in the area of bankruptcy law. As opportunities to address the needs of potential clients in other geographic areas increased, additional offices were opened over the years. We now have four locations to serve the consumer debtors in over 50 central Indiana counties. Since its beginning, the Bankruptcy Office has filed over 20,000 cases.
At our firm, we always focus on finding a legal solution that is in the best interest of each client. Although many of our clients do file for bankruptcy, filing bankruptcy is not the answer for every client with financial difficulties. We have the tools to explain other options for debt-relief and debt management that may provide more appropriate and effective solutions. We will not advise a client to file bankruptcy if we feel it is not the best option.
Previous Employment Summary
Prior to opening the Bankruptcy Law Office, I worked at the state's premier corporate bankruptcy law firm. I focused on some of the largest corporate bankruptcy proceedings ever filed in the state.
Activities and Awards
I am AV-Rated by Martindale-Hubbell. I am one of only nine board certified Consumer Bankruptcy Specialists in Indiana. I frequently lecture both locally and nationally to lawyers and various groups on the topic of consumer bankruptcy law. In fact, I even spoke on a national level at both the American Bankruptcy Institute Conference and annual National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges. I have been recognized by Who's Who in American Law, the Best Lawyers in America Consumer Guide, and was the only consumer bankruptcy attorney to be named in the March 2005 Edition of the Indianapolis Monthly Magazine's list of Indiana Super Lawyers. I was awarded Master Distinguished Fellow by the Indianapolis Bar Association.
What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
The more my client knows concerning the area of consumer bankruptcy, the easier it will be to determine what, if any, representation is necessary. That knowledge will also help to make the representation more successful.
I do have concerns over some of the misinformation that is available to potential clients over the internet. It can give clients unrealistic expectations as to what can be accomplished with regard to their individual situation.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
We do review documents prepared by clients, particularly those who have seen certain other offices in the area, if they have completed worksheets and other forms. We use these forms as an additional source. However, we do our own document intakes with our own attorneys to ensure the quality of work produced.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
Considering the complexity and the potential traps which can result in dismissal under the new amendments to the bankruptcy code, we usually strongly advise against acting pro se in a consumer bankruptcy case.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
I like to assist people in accomplishing their goals. Being an attorney allows me to assist people in a meaningful way.
Clients often respond to my help with gratitude, and have gone so far as to show their appreciation through hugs and thank you cards at the conclusion of their representation.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
I have over 20-years of experience helping good people through bad financial times.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
Bankruptcy was a natural fit for me, given the amount of client interaction and high level of satisfaction derived from helping others.
What do you like best about your career?
The best thing about my career is that I get to meet a lot of people in the process -- clients, attorneys, and trustees - all working to get clients back on their feet.
Tell us about your law firm:
There are seven attorneys, including myself, at my firm who do nothing but bankruptcy. I have a very dedicated staff that not only understand the legal process of bankruptcy, but are also very attentive to our clients' needs and concerns. Our firm understands that bankruptcy is a life-changing event for our clients.
What are your strengths and style?
I genuinely care about what I do and the clients I serve. I am passionate about my work, and a true student of my area of law. I am also good at seeing the big picture and developing theories and strategies for cases. I am knowledgeable, direct and highly regarded by my peers and the bench. I get to the bottom line efficiently and effectively.
Personal Interests:
I especially enjoy spending time with my wife and family.
