Firm Focus and History

I have practiced law since 1979 and offer to my clients the experience and care for their problems that come with over 26 years of experience. I handle general civil litigation and small business transactions.

My litigation experience includes general civil litigation, personal injury, construction contract and defect issues, employment discrimination, wrongful termination, creditors' rights, insurance subrogation and bad faith. I provide representation in arbitration, mediation, trials and appeals.

I have experience in business and commercial transactions, including formation of corporations and LLC's, drafting of purchase-sale agreements for businesses and real property, lease preparation and review, employment counseling, and preparation of general business contracts.

Previous Employment Summary

I established my own practice in 1998 after working for mid size firms for a number of years.

Activities and Awards

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

It is valuable for clients and for attorneys for clients to be as knowledgeable as possible about legal matters. The more clients understand about the law and procedures, the better they will be able to handle specific matters. In addition, the law should not be a mystery for citizens.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am very willing to review their documents. All I ask is that they be willing to discuss the documents and their objectives.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I have no problem doing that.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I like legal reasoning and the process of applying the law to a particular set of facts. I felt this was an area where I could make a meaningful contribution while doing work I would enjoy.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I have worked in various business settings and in counseling, which has allowed me to understand different perspectives that may be involved in a problem. In addition, I have taught business law courses, where students have helped remind me of the need for practical solutions to legal problems. Because I grew up in Mexico City and practiced law in Spain, I can offer representation and advice to Spanish speaking clients.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I found I liked it.

What do you like best about your career?

I best like bringing about the satisfactory resolution of a problem or helping a client achieve his or her objective

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a solo practitioner so all my clients deal directly with me. My clients never have the uneasy feeling that can come from having their affairs handed to a paralegal or new associate.

What are your strengths and style?

I think I bring a calm yet resolute approach to problems, helping clients find a reasonable solution to their problems or the most effective way to achieve their goals. I try to focus on what the client wants to accomplish.

Personal Interests:

I enjoy a number of the cultural attractions we have in the Bay Area: The San Francisco Opera; The San Francisco Symphony; our numerous museums; a variety of stage presentations.

Fixed-Price Services and Fees

Generally, I bill on an hourly basis. However, in response to client requests I have established budgets, maximum possible charges and flat fees.

Hourly Rates

Generally $250 or $275 depending on the complexity of the matter, although litigation in which bills may not be paid for a long time is often billed at a rate of $350. I am more than willing to discuss concerns so that we can agree on a mutually acceptable billing formula.

Free Initial Consultation?

Yes. The length of time has to be reasonable, but I feel it is unreasonable to start a stop watch, so the length of the initial consultation depends on the subject matter of the consultation. The concept in an initial consultation is to understand the client's objectives or problem and what services I can offer.

Typical Retainer

It depends on the nature of the case. It can run from $1200 up.

Understanding Fees

Nolo's Licensing Check

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the state agency that licenses lawyers upon joining the directory.

Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any state licensing agency.
