Papers and Publications
I have written two articles for the Columbus Bar Association:
• "Consumer Debt, Easy to get Into, Hard to get Out."
• "New Long and Winding Road Out of Debt," which summarizes the relevant provisions of Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act (BAPCPA).
Example Cases
We represented a family with a home that was not worth as much as their 1st mortgage balance and they had fallen behind on their payments. They have a home equity line of credit (2nd mortgage) which had become increasingly more difficult to pay on time. One of their vehicles was paid off, but they fell behind on payments for the. Due to a job loss, credit card debt had grown to $25,000. This family was able to use their future wages to fund a court protect repayment plan under Chapter 13. The Chapter 13 plan will allow them to keep their home and cars, modify their car loan to a new payment, reclassify their 2nd mortgage (i.e. remove it from their deed and pay it as an unsecured creditor) and pay back only a percentage of what is owed to their unsecured creditors (credit cards and balance of what was a 2nd mortgage). We have obtained similar results for hundreds of individuals and families.

Our firm is dedicated to helping financially distressed consumers find the right financial solution. We offer bankruptcy and non-bankruptcy legal debt solutions and have changed thousands of lives over the last 15 years.
Our law firm was started in July of 1994 by Bradley P. Koffel and me. We were law school classmates. Mr. Koffel's practice focuses on criminal law, while my practice is dedicated to helping individuals who are experiencing financial difficulty. The law firm is now regarded as one of the finest boutique law firms in the State of Ohio. There are a total of eight attorneys in the firm, three work for Mr. Koffel and three work for me.
Previous Employment Summary
I started my law firm right out of law school. I worked in law school at the City Attorney's Office, Civil Division and served as an intern clerk to the Honorable A. William Sweeney of Supreme Court of Ohio.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
I occasionally see individuals and families in bankruptcy court who are representing themselves. Each time, I feel sorry for them. By not hiring an attorney, they have made it so much more difficult to resolve their situation than is necessary. I don't know why anyone would represent themselves.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
I am not willing to review client-prepared documents. If a client retains us, we will prepare all of their documents for them.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
I am absolutely unwilling to offer this type of service. You can't be half-pregnant; you either represent someone or you don't.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
I decided to become a lawyer because I wanted to help people.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
I grew up overseas and studied abroad in college. I also served as an intern/clerk for an Ohio Supreme Court Judge while in Law School. I have interacted with individuals and families from all walks of life and this has helped me relate to people's challenges and help solve their problems.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
I felt there were too few qualified attorneys helping people in financial trouble.
What do you like best about your career?
For the most part, I am able to predict the anticipated outcome for a client. In almost all instances, clients are better off when they leave our office than when they arrived. It is a really good feeling to be able to identify a person's problem and in the next breath offer a solution.
Tell us about your law firm:
We have four attorneys, including me, six paralegals and two administrative staff. We have staff dedicated to accepting both new and current client calls. Each client meets with an attorney upon their first visit to our office. Further, clients are always able to schedule both office and telephone conferences. Many of our clients are referred from past clients which speaks volumes about our client service.
What are your strengths and style?
My clients constantly tell me that they feel better after talking to me. I think my style is to listen and frame legal solutions in terms that clients can easily understand.
Personal Interests:
Family, golf in the summer and skiing in the winter. I love to travel with family.
