We provide effective representation in state and federal courts for felony and misdemeanor criminal cases.

Previous Employment Summary

I have been practicing law since 1972.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I feel that a client who has been educated on the legal issues of their case is in a better position to make the tough judgments necessary to guide his case. Also, an understanding of the system can help alleviate some of the fear inherent in being a defendant in a criminal case. To that end, I have included pages in my website which have some basic legal definitions and a guide to posting bail and going to court.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am always ready to listen to the client and read anything they have written. Even if it does not help the case, it cannot hurt the case and it gives me a better understanding of what my client is thinking.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I will only coach clients to represent themselves in the most minor matters that they can handle as well as an attorney can. If they don't need an attorney, I will tell them that.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I wanted to help people who were not able to help themselves.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I went to law school after spending three years as an officer in the U.S. army, including a year in combat in Vietnam. I feel my experience in Vietnam, plus the three additional years of army life experience, helped me in law school and in my legal practice.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I never wanted to be in a big firm or work for someone else. From day one, I hung out my "shingle" and started my own law practice as a solo practitioner.

What do you like best about your career?

I like looking back at the number of people I have helped.

Tell us about your law firm:

I always work directly with all my clients. I have an excellent assistant, Ruth, who knows each client and cares about their cases and general welfare.

What are your strengths and style?

I always start with the idea of getting a case dismissed. I analyze the facts and legal issues involved in each case. If unable to get a dismissal, I determine the strengths of the case for a jury trial and compare it to what we can obtain in a plea bargain with the state. Ultimately, we inform our client of their position, and let our client determine the direction we take.

Personal Interests:

In my spare time I enjoy the beach, traveling and spending time on the ranch competing in international contests on my amateur radio setup.

Understanding Fees

Nolo's Licensing Check

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the state agency that licenses lawyers upon joining the directory.

Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any state licensing agency.
