Previous Employment Summary
I entered private practice in 1991 directly following admission to the bar, joining husband Jim Chalat as a partner of Chalat Law Offices, PC.
Activities and Awards
I have been recognized by my peers for inclusion on the 2011 Colorado SuperLawyers list. I have earned a "BV" rating (distinguished rating) by Martindale-Hubbell®, the authoritative resource for information on the worldwide legal profession. Attorneys with a BV® Distinguished™ Rating from Martindale-Hubbell® are those that have been recognized by their peers to be the best in both legal ability and ethical practice. I have also received an Avvo rating of "8.4" as shown on my Avvo profile. And in 2011, I was recognized as a Woman of the Year by the National Association of Professional Women.
What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
We strongly believe that an informed consumer is always a better advocate and client. Particularly in personal injury matters, the law is not always intuitive and having an understanding of basic concepts is essential for a successful claimant.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
No, there are strong proscriptions against "ghost writing" by attorneys in Colorado and we find it best not to engage in any conduct which could be interpreted as such.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
When presented a matter which we feel can be adequately handled by an individual, we routinely encourage claimants to pursue a settlement on their own, or to consider filing in small claims court when appropriate. We do offer advice on negotiation strategy and claims to be argued.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
After working in industry as a chemical engineer for several years, I became interested in the intersection, and the conflict, of legal concepts and industrial operations.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
My engineering knowledge, gained from both training and working in industry, gives me a great advantage in matters where an understanding of the technical aspects of the accident are crucial to the adequate representation of the client.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
I fell in love with a personal injury lawyer while in law school and we have been together ever since.
What do you like best about your career?
The great variety of work, each case being unique, and each client having personal needs to be addressed.
Tell us about your law firm:
We know that when a client hires a personal injury lawyer, the legal work should be performed by the lawyer, not a secretary or paralegal. Our firm is purposely small, with five lawyers and two staff people, so that our lawyers are the main point of contact for each client. Jim Chalat, Linda Chalat and Russell Hatten have been working together as a team for ten years, and the success of the past decade demonstrates the strength of the partnership.
What are your strengths and style?
I am a detail-oriented, honest, and passionate advocate.
Personal Interests:
Spending time with family, cycling, and volunteering at the local public school district.
