Firm Focus and History

The firm specializes in exceptional criminal defense and exceptional removal defense. Leslie J. Castro, P.C. was established in January 2005 after I opened my own practice.

Previous Employment Summary

After graduating from law school, I moved to Grand Junction, Colorado. I was very fortunate to be hired as a legal assistant with the law firm of Carlson, Meissner & Gurley ("CMG"), which specialized in personal injury, worker's compensation, social security disability and criminal defense. Once I passed the bar exam, CMG hired me as an associate lawyer. I am grateful to CMG because I learned much about the private practice of law and helping real people with real problems. I left in December 2004 to establish my own practice.

While in law school, I worked as a paralegal for Zipin & Melehy, an employment and civil rights firm in Silver Spring, Maryland, and the immigration firm of Carliner, Remes & Mirbagheri-Smith in Washington, D.C. I also wrote asylum petitions as an intern for the World Organization Against Torture in Washington, D.C. and I educated farmworkers on their legal rights as a Law Fellow for Idaho Legal Aid's Migrant Farmworker Unit in Caldwell, Idaho. Finally, I was a Faculty Advisor for National Youth Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C., which introduces high school students to the practice of law in our nation's capital.

While in college, I worked the graveyard shift for a computer chip manufacturer, American Microsystems, Inc. In high school and before college I worked as an Assistant Head Waitress, an Assistant Manager and a Night Shift Supervisor at various restaurants. I have always tried to work my way to the top of any job I have had, because no matter what you do for a living, you should perform to the best of your capabilities. I know that hard work is one of the secrets to a successful life - and to a successful case outcome.

Activities and Awards

I volunteer on several boards to improve our local and state legal system and to improve access to the courts for all. I am also very involved in the community of Colorado lawyers by being active in the local and state bar associations. Mesa County, Colorado is my community, and I wish to do everything I can to improve the practice of law and make Mesa County a better place for everyone.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

Part of my responsibility as a lawyer is educating everyone on their rights. Clients should educate themselves on legal issues affecting them so they can ask intelligent questions, make informed decisions, and to assist me with obtaining the best possible outcome for them.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I welcome reviewing documents prepared by clients because clients are essential to my understanding of the facts and issues in a particular case. Documents prepared by clients also help to ensure that I work toward the particular outcome desired by a client. I am an advocate, but I do not take any course of action without a client's knowledge and approval.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

Clients should not represent themselves, except perhaps, on minor traffic infractions, as the stakes are high in any given criminal case. (See my Free Advice page.) Clients need expertise when their lives, jobs and families depend on the outcome of a particular case. Also, there are many consequences to a conviction on even a minor crime. Some attorneys do not even know about these consequences! Finally, ethical and professional obligations prevent me from giving advice to people who do not wish to hire an attorney and to represent themselves. If you are charged with a minor traffic infraction and wish to represent yourself, I suggest reading a Nolo book called Beat Your Ticket: Go to Court & Win.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I became a lawyer because I wanted to help people.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

What makes me different from many lawyers is that I have worked for everything that I have. I have worked my way up from cleaning warehouses, my first job at 15 years old, to waiting tables, to working the graveyard shift for seven years and to working for other lawyers and seeing how they run their practices and their businesses. I know what it's like to worry about the rent payment, the grocery bill or how I'm going to get to school or work the next day. I recognize that if I had one less opportunity, or one less fortunate occurrence in my life, I might be exactly where my clients are right now. This is why I represent my clients the way I would want to be represented. All lawyers are well-educated and have some knowledge of the law, but my life experiences set me apart from other lawyers and make me a better representative of my clients and a person with whom jurors are more able to relate.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

The powerful, the government, for example, has vast amounts of resources to further the status quo that keeps it powerful. I have never been interested in being a part of the resources of the powerful. I want to be a check on power and to stand up for the rights of the individual. Criminal law is where the battle between government power and individual rights takes place. The individuals who are brought to court by the government determine the individual rights of us all. So do their lawyers. And I'm here to protect the Bill of Rights against government encroachment.

Not only do individuals being prosecuted by the government need assistance, but also those who must navigate the complex immigration laws of this country. Many of us need look no further than our own families to see that we are truly a nation of immigrants. I want to help people experience the benefits that living and working with authorization in the U.S. can provide.

I have an obligation to use my talents, education and experience to help people in need. I choose to go where I am needed - not to the powerful - but to the people who need my expertise most. I can think of no better law to assist those in need than criminal defense and immigration.

What do you like best about your career?

My life means something because I am able to help people in need.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a solo practitioner, so all of my clients deal directly with me.

What are your strengths and style?

Besides my life experience, my education sets me apart from other lawyers. I graduated from one of the top law schools in the country, Georgetown University Law Center. I studied 9 blocks from the United States Supreme Court. I studied from an individual that literally "wrote the book" on evidence law in this country. I attended classes from one of the top lawyers and writers in criminal law. I studied constitutional law under a lawyer that worked in the White House. Many of my professors regularly argued before the U.S. Supreme Court, and many developed the law and policy we use today. (Please check out Georgetown University Law Center to learn more on your own.) Many lawyers you can hire were at the top of their class; I went to law school with some of the brightest minds in the country. I even had a superior education as an undergraduate, where I received a jump start on criminal law, constitutional law, history and politics. I am grateful for the opportunities my education has provided me, especially the opportunity to help clients in need.

I also am a fearless advocate. I am not afraid to assert my clients' rights for fear that the judge may think it a waste of time or the prosecutor's feathers may be ruffled. I know that we are all human and have vast more things in common than we have different. And everyone is deserving of respect, whether it is a person that has absolutely nothing and no one in the world to a person in a position of power. But my role as a representative of my client is an advocate. Whatever direction my client wishes to pursue, I am their advocate. And I advocate with fearlessness!

Personal Interests:

I am very active outdoors. I enjoy snowboarding on snow-topped Colorado mountains and mountain biking in the Grand Junction desert. I try to read a lot outside the law, mostly fiction, and I love all kinds of music and creating things, like taking photographs. Spending time with my family and my friends also keeps me a well-grounded person.

Fixed-Price Services and Fees

I do not have a fixed-price for fees, as criminal and immigration cases can be very simple or very complex due to the facts, the outcome desired, the way a criminal offense is charged, and the history of the client. If the case is a criminal case in Mesa County Colorado, I will often offer a flat fee for representation, which means you pay one fee no matter how few or how many hours it takes to resolve your case. My exception for flat-fee cases in Mesa County, Colorado is for serious felonies such as murder cases and sexual assault cases, for which I would charge my hourly fee. For cases outside of Mesa County, Colorado, I charge my hourly fee with a deposit, determined by me and agreed upon by the client, up front, against which I charge the hourly rate.
