Firm Focus and History

I bring 33 years of experience to the practice of law and mediation in the fields of real estate and business. My solo practice was established on August 1, 1994.

Previous Employment Summary

In 1994, after having been a partner in the law firm of Whiting, Rubenstein, Swager & Levy for approximately 12 years, I formed my own solo practice, continuing to specialize in the same areas of real estate and business law. Currently, I am also a California licensed real estate broker.

Activities and Awards

I have been AV-rated by Martindale-Hubble and have done pro bono work for the Berkeley Humane Society, Tibetan Association of Northern California and the Richmond Art Center. I have served on the boards of four nonprofit corporations and have been a member of Richmond Rotary since 1987 and served as its first female president for 2000-2001. I also have been a member of American Inns of Court Symposium, Soroptimist Club and the Contract Costa County Fee Arbitration Panel.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

By clearly communicating my legal knowledge, I enable my clients to make well-informed decisions for themselves. In so doing, I encourage my clients to seek knowledge from other reputable sources, such as Nolo, because I find that my clients who are better informed are able to make the most rational and practical decisions about their cases.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am quite willing to review documents prepared by clients.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I am quite willing to guide clients who wish to represent themselves.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I became interested in real property/real estate and business law during my first year of law school and that interest never has waned.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

Not only am I well trained to represent clients in litigation, I also am skilled in reviewing and preparing contracts or documents to help prevent future disputes.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

Contract law, which underlies much of real property and business law, fascinates me, primarily because it is a vehicle for formalized communication which is a part of everyday life.

What do you like best about your career?

The concept of reaching “a meeting of minds” is crucially important in our complex society and I enjoy handling the kinds of issues which arise in the context of formal agreements.

Tell us about your law firm:

As a sole practitioner, I offer a personalized attorney-client relationship based on each client's unique concerns and requirements.

What are your strengths and style?

Always mindful of the cost of litigation, I diligently pursue out-of-court settlements in contested cases. Confident of the value of alternative dispute processes, I completed two in-depth training courses in mediation, sharpening my skills in order that I may help parties in litigation or having a dispute avoid more time-consuming and costly remedies.

Not only am I well- trained to represent clients in litigation, I also am skilled in reviewing and preparing contracts or documents to help prevent future disputes.

Personal Interests:

My undergraduate degree is in Art History. I have had a lifelong interest in art and architecture. I have lived abroad, one year in France and one year in Israel, and I am fluent in French and Hebrew.

Fixed-Price Services and Fees

I do not have any fixed-price services or fees. In my practice, each case is relatively unique. For example, if I am asked to draft a commercial lease, my services might include assisting in protracted negotiations concerning the terms and provisions of the lease, in addition to drafting it. If the parties to the lease already are in agreement on most of the major provisions, then the amount of time necessary for me to assist is much less than would be required if the parties have not previously reached agreement on terms and conditions. Another example involves cases that are in a pre-litigation stage or already are in litigation. I am unable to predict in advance how much time will be required to handle the case from commencement through trial because a typical real estate case often involves more than two parties and numerous documents. Moreover, most of the cases (approximately 90%) which I handle settle before trial commences. I cannot predict in advance how soon the case will settle and how many parties might become involved in it.

Hourly Rates

hourly rate for my services is $300. I am prepared to do legal work at the rate of $275 per hour for those clients who found me through Nolo.

Free Initial Consultation?

I typically do not offer a free initial consultation because, in most cases, during the initial consultations, I am able to review pertinent documents and/or absorb the underlying facts by discussing them with the client and then and there give the client advice and guidance about his/her legal position/options, rights and duties.

Typical Retainer

I do not have a typical retainer fee requirement.

Understanding Fees

Nolo's Licensing Check

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the state agency that licenses lawyers upon joining the directory.

Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any state licensing agency.
