Firm Overview

We help individuals and couples file Chapter 7 and 13 bankruptcies in the Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of New York in the Syracuse and Utica divisions. We have filed over 7,000 successful bankruptcy cases since 1994. We have locations to meet with clients in Syracuse, Utica, Binghamton, Watertown, Oneonta, Norwich, Oneida, Fulton, Homer, Auburn, Amsterdam, Herkimer and Ithaca, NY.

After working for large law firms, representing primarily creditors in bankruptcy court, I decided I wanted to help individuals successfully navigate through the bankruptcy process rather than repossess cars or foreclose on homes. In 1995, I started my own bankruptcy practice. In 2008, I married and my name changed to Laura Harris-Courage. In 2010, I asked Jessica Grady to be my partner and we changed our name to Harris-Courage & Grady, PLLC.

Example cases

First, we offer free phone consultations to determine if bankruptcy is the right answer for the client's situation. We then spend two hours at the initial appointment completing as much of the bankruptcy paperwork as possible. Clients do not fill out long forms, but rather bring their bills and other documents and we complete the forms. We have a very sophisticated computer system to make sure we have all the documents and information we need to proceed. We are the only firm to have a system to make sure clients do not lose their cars because of their bankruptcy. We also have procedures to make sure clients complete their required courses. We stop creditors from harassing clients. We stop foreclosures and put together plans to pay back the arrears over time. We stop garnishments on wages. We help clients get rid of overwhelming debt and help them gain a fresh start. We help clients have hope again.

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

Because I can really help individuals and families gain financial freedom at a bargain cost. Bankruptcy is something that actually works. Unlike credit counseling and debt reduction programs which only work in a minority of cases, bankruptcy actually discharges debt clients cannot pay and gives them a fresh start. I love it!

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

Bankruptcy is very confusing and the system is set up to prevent individuals from making it through the bankruptcy process. I have seen lawyers filing for bankruptcy have their cases dismissed because they did not follow all of the requirements. Also, what applies to one person or couple will likely not apply to another. Each case is very specific to the facts. I have also seen creditors take advantage of individuals trying to get through the system (without attorneys) by getting the individuals to agree to pay back debt they do not need to pay. It is good to get information about the process so you can choose an attorney who knows what they are doing.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

We can review the documents, but we find that the information is nearly always in a form which will create problems for the individual. For example, most individuals over-value their assets in the bankruptcy process. The trustee then must take these assets. The exemptions are tricky even for lawyers to understand. Deciding on which exemptions to take is critical to a successful bankruptcy. Frankly, we find it best just to work with the clients by reviewing their original documents, such as titles, paystubs, deeds, mortgages, tax returns, and bills.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

It would cost us more to coach a client than to just do it. Our fees are extremely reasonable, especially considering the huge benefit resulting with a discharge of thousands of dollars worth of debt.

While representing creditors at the large law firms, I learned how the other side thinks and works. I now use this knowledge to help clients get the results they want. I learned that bankruptcy is a great system to really help individuals and families get rid of oppressive debt and have hope again. I really love helping people regain their financial freedom.

We care about our clients and their success. If bankruptcy will not work for a person or if there is a better alternative, we will be the first to let the potential client know. We really want to do what is best for the client. We also have a great bankruptcy software system which makes sure we do every case correctly.
