Example Cases

One memorable case I worked on involved a man who was discriminated against based on his race. It was rewarding to hold the employer accountable, even as it attempted to hide what it had been doing. Another matter I was involved in was memorable because I advised a parent about some problems he was having with a school about his son, who had epilepsy. Although my services to this individual were simply providing advice, I particularly enjoyed helping him because I myself have a son with autism, and I can relate to the feeling that you really need to help someone with a disability.

Firm Focus and History

Thompson Law Office has a general practice that focuses on serving the needs of individuals and small to mid-sized businesses in various areas, including but not limited to bankruptcy, divorce, child custody, business law, employment law, unemployment benefits, estate planning, probate, and homeowners associations.

Previous Employment Summary

Thompson Law Office was founded in 2007 by attorney Ben Thompson, who had a vision for a revolutionary approach to the practice of law that prioritized the accessibility and affordability of quality legal counsel. The revolution has been driven by emerging technologies and a commitment to superior client service. The firm has grown quickly into one of west Omaha's largest law firms by recruiting and attracting attorneys with outstanding backgrounds who can provide quality professional legal advice. The legal professionals at Thompson Law Office represent a diverse group of talented individuals that provide a perspective built on experience in various areas of the law.

Attorney Katherine Busch has focused on client counseling and advocacy throughout her career. Ms. Busch's previous experience includes serving as an administrative law judge for the Department of Labor, with the Nebraska Apepals Tribunal. In that role, Ms. Busch accumulated a vast range of experience with people who had faced stress or conflict about their employment. She conducted hearings and wrote decisions in appeals filed in connection with unemployment benefit determinations. Ms. Busch currently counsels clients in this area, and performs work in the area of unemployment benefits appeals. Ms. Busch's primary area of practice is employment law, practicing in both state and federal court in cases of wrongful discrimination, harassment, or retaliation based on age, disability, race, sex, or other grounds such as whistleblower retaliation, as well as the Family and Medical Leave Act.

Activities and Awards

Graduate of the 2008-2009 Nebraska Bar Association Leadership Academy.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

Having an informed client makes our representation more effective and demonstrates a client's commitment to the cause. We strive to educate our clients on legal issues while encouraging them to be engaged in the process and seek answers to their legal questions.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Under appropriate circumstances we will review client-prepared documents and make suggestions in the interest of cost-effective legal services.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

We recognize that some disputes do not justify an attorney appearing in court and will work with "pro se" clients who choose to represent themselves in court. In fact, in Nebraska's small claims courts, parties are not allowed to have attorneys. Oftentimes we can assist after a client is awarded a judgment by taking steps to collect on the judgment or "garnish" or "execute" on the judgment debtor's property.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I decided to become a lawyer because I want to help people and solve problems with my talents.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I think my English degree from the University of Chicago has enhanced my ability to think with originality and to be analytical. I think my life experience parenting three children has made me good at management.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I like employment law because, unfortunately, things like racism and harassment still occur in today's world, and I can do something about it in these cases.

What do you like best about your career?

I like the tools available to me as an attorney that I can use to solve problems.

Tell us about your law firm:

We have a close-knit group at Thompson Law Office. We meet on a regular basis and collaborate. We also discuss what we are doing and where we want our practice to be going on a regular basis.

What are your strengths and style?

My greatest strength is probably that I am tenacious. I can put this quality to use for the benefit of my clients.

Personal Interests:

I like to train my dog. I love to spend time with my children and do yard work. I also enjoy theater.

Fixed-Price Services and Fees

In the employment context, I generally offer my clients a choice of three different billing options: hourly, contingency, or a hybrid arrangement where the client pays hourly up to a particular dollar amount and then it converts to a contingency fee. This depends on the circumstances of the case though. We accept all major credit cards.

Hourly Rates

$145 to $275 for attorneys; $75 to $125 for paralegals and legal assistants; and $35 to $55 for law clerks.

Free Initial Consultation?

We offer all of our prospective clients a free "meet and greet." It is a 15-minute meeting with an attorney where you can learn more about our firm, our qualifications, and experience. We also offer a consultation with an attorney for either thirty minutes or an hour, depending on the type of service. Our consultation appointments allow the attorney to learn more about your particular situation and provide responsible advice to you about your legal rights and obligations. We do charge a fee for this consultation, but it is generally a discounted flat fee which is dependent on your type of case.

Typical Retainer

Retainers vary depending on the circumstances of each case, but they are typically between $1,000.00 and $2,500.00.

Understanding Fees

Nolo's Licensing Check

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the state agency that licenses lawyers upon joining the directory.

Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any state licensing agency.
