Our firm focuses exclusively on employment issues. We represent individuals and businesses from the initiation to the termination of the employment relationship. We provide training to employees and managers and conduct investigations. We negotiate, resolve, and litigate. We also have expertise in representing federal employees throughout the country and the world before the EEOC, FSGB, MSPB, OSC, and other administrative bodies. We also assist businesses and employees with security clearance issues.
I originated the firm in 1975 as an employment law boutique. It has grown over the years. Elizabeth Newman, George Chuzi and I have been working together since 1990. Elaine Fitch joined the firm in 2002, and became a partner in 2006.
• Won $250,000 in compensatory damages plus other monetary and equitable damages in a retaliation case against the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Employment law is an extremely challenging and emotionally charged area of the law as employers and employees vest great emotional energy in the work experience. I enjoy attempting to resolve their difficult issues.
It is extremely important for clients to educate themselves on legal issues. Doing so helps people to better understand their rights, what is important, what documents may be helpful to their situation, and when to contact a lawyer for assistance or advice.
I find it tremendously helpful to review documents prepared by a client because it enables me to focus on what the client perceives as important and provides the client thoughtful time to gather their thoughts or prepare a chronology of events that helps focus our time together.
I am happy to provide such advice or coaching within the boundaries of my ethical guidelines.
After graduating from law school in 1973, I worked at Georgetown University Law Center directing the Juris Doctor/Master of Science in Foreign Services (JD-MSFS) joint degree program from 1973 to 1975. When I left the Law Center, I started the firm in 1975, which has become Kalijarvi, Chuzi & Newman, P.C.
Despite being one of the few women graduating from one of the best law schools in the country, upon graduation I was unable to find a legal position. I believe that rejection has enabled me to understand better the issues which arise between employers and employees. It also gave me the force of will to start my own practice.
Litigation is essentially problem solving. I am very good as assessing issues that arise in an employment situation and identifying means to resolve them. I also am very good at litigating if the employment situation cannot be resolved.Personal interests:
I enjoy being with my family and my two grown children - one of whom is an attorney specializing in employment law and the other is a U.S. Marine Corps Officer. I enjoy reading detective stories and hosting good friends.
