What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

All clients should educate themselves on legal issues. The better educated a client is on legal issues, the better the client is able to make decisions which will be in their best interest, and to assist their lawyer. We recommend the appropriate book or books for clients to read to educate themselves. Many of those books are Nolo books.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Document review is one of our core services. We review documents prepared by clients quickly and affordably. Documents can be uploaded to our extranet for us to review.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

We assist clients who wish to represent themselves. We provide a full range of unbundled legal services on an a la carte basis. The client only pays for those services they need. We will also be offering online forms and services.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I became an attorney to help people.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I have been through my own divorce. I know the emotions involved.

I am a trained mediator, who has helped many divorcing couples reach agreement.

I have received training in collaborative divorce.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I chose domestic relations and family law because I wanted to directly help people constructively resolve those matters.

What do you like best about your career?

I like practicing divorce and family law because I can help people make important decisions in their lives.

Tell us about your law firm:

The Clarkson Law Office, Ltd. is a two attorney firm in Reno, Washoe County, Nevada. All of our clients deal directly with me or my associate attorney, in person, by email, or over the internet. Our staff is sensitive and caring.

What are your strengths and style?

I am a good listener. I care about my clients. My clients and I work as a team to resolve their family law matters. It is the client who must live with the outcome of their cases, so the client is an active participant in their case.

We are different from a typical family law firm because:
1. Our services are provided over the internet, or in our office.

2. You know what you will pay - no surprises.

3. We support the concept of you doing part of the work yourself to save legal fees.

4. We support the concept of "self-help law," if you wish to prepare and file your own documents and represent yourself in court. Our role is then to help you prepare and/or review your documents, give you the legal advice you need, and prepare you to represent yourself so that you can avoid making any crucial mistakes. We will also advise you as to whether or not you are a candidate for the "self-help" approach.

Personal Interests:

I enjoy learning about and experimenting with new software and new technologies that can be used in the delivery of legal services.
