Firm Overview

My law practice began in 1983 when I handled primarily criminal defense, domestic relations, and collections/bankruptcy matters. In 1985, I joined two other attorneys and formed Goodman, Hudnall and McManus, a law firm that handled collections (and related bankruptcy issues), criminal defense and real estate closings and related matters. I left that firm in May, 1991 and formed the present firm. We have recently formed a non-profit firm, Professional Ministries, Inc., that provides free legal services to the homeless and poor in our area.

My law firm is currently focused on debtor and creditor bankruptcy, business and personal, as well as handling real estate matters, including closings, REO closings, and contested real estate matters. We also handle domestic relations matters, including divorce, child custody, probate, and related family law matters. We also handle general civil litigation and some criminal matters, although that practice has been more of a focus of our pro bono legal services to the homeless and poor.

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

The needs of clients directed me to this area of practice.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

We attempt to educate clients about the matter presented so that they will understand why certain requests are being made of them throughout the process. We encourage clients to do whatever they can themselves, without professional help (ex. filing small claims in Magistrate Court). Although this is not practical in bankruptcy matters, we believe clients should have a comprehensive understanding of the issues presented in their particular matter.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

We will assist clients in any way that is appropriate.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I encourage clients to do whatever they can on their own to handle many legal matters. However, self-help is normally not appropriate for bankruptcy clients.

John J. McManus

From 1981 to 1982, I was appointed President of a company that made greeting cards. We shipped those cards domestically and overseas. From 1980 to 1981, I was appointed by the U.S. Trustee as President of two companies that were in Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Prior to that, I worked for Sears from 1969 to 1980, last as a collections manager.

Each experience in life, whether from education, work or life experience, and whether good or bad, can be used to assist others through the difficult times they are facing.

I work on a one-on-one basis with clients and attempt to compassionately, yet professionally empower clients to take control of the circumstances in which they find themselves.

Personal interests:

I am a Roman Catholic Deacon interested in the welfare of the homeless and poor. In my spare time, I am involved in Tae Kwon Do.
