Firm Focus and History
My firm is focusing on giving the people of Long Island with compassionate and experienced support in their endeavors in family law. We understand how emotionally difficult it can be to navigate through something as tricky as this and we want to be able to help our clients get through as painlessly as possible.
I established my firm in 1976 and named it Jerome A. Wisselman & Associated, P.C. I then began to carefully pick the lawyers I would surround myself with. Later, in 2006, I invited my associate Jacqueline Harounian to become partners and changed the name to reflect the change within the company dynamics.
Previous Employment Summary
I have spent many years building up my reputation as an experienced, knowledgeable family lawyer able to handle all areas that my clients might be struggling with.
Activities and Awards
2009 New York Super Lawyer
What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
I firmly believe that clients should never be left in the dark regarding their own cases. I, therefore, always encourage my clients to be well-informed about the legal issues they are surrounded with. If they need it, I am open to sitting down and helping educate them so they fully understand.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
If I feel the document they are giving to me is useful to my primary goal of helping get them a successful outcome, then I welcome it.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
I am willing to sit down with my clients to discuss their case so that we can, together, decide how I will best be able to offer my assistance.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
I decided to become a lawyer because I wanted to be able to help people who were going through an emotionally difficult time in their lives. By offering legal support, I am able to help them to create a new foundation that they can build the next part of their life on.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
My excellent, extensive education and my years spent practicing family law have given me the tools and knowledge necessary to help my clients to the best of my ability. I understand the law intimately well and am able to help my clients no matter the specific situation that they are in.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
I chose to practice family law because I feel there is no area of law that is more emotionally tied or closer to the heart than family law. Due to this, I think it is exceptionally important that it is not only handled with skill and care, but also with a certain level of finesse.
What do you like best about your career?
I love being able to help people in their time of need. When someone approaches family law, they are often tired and hurt. I consider it my duty to protect my clients and guide them through the legal process as carefully as possible.
Tell us about your law firm:
I work with a handpicked group of lawyers with a rich background in all manners of family law. By combining our knowledge and expertise, we are able to help to get our clients the necessary skills to help them in whatever manner is necessary.
What are your strengths and style?
I am creative and tenacious when it comes to family law, but I also walk a fine line with compassion as well. I understand what my clients are going through and I do everything in my power to be sensitive to their situation while also aggressively defending their rights.
