Estate Planning

Preferred New Clients

I enjoy working with young families with children to help them plan for the unexpected. I also regularly work with families or individuals later in life. Once someone has passed on, my goal is to help the family members left behind cope and progress through whatever process is necessary to deal with the deceased's affairs.

Continuing Education

I fulfill my CLE through Legal Education Seminars mainly focusing on estate planning and probate.

Example Cases

My most frequent case is a young family that is interested in setting up an estate plan. Their primary goal is usually nominating a guardian for their children if something should happen to them. We then look at their entire family situation and decide on a comprehensive plan that works for their family. Again, every family is different and I approach each case with that mindset.

My most frequent probate case is simple. Someone's loved one has passed and the survivor, whether it is a child, spouse, or sibling, needs help on what to do next. That is the basic inquiry, and we develop a way forward that is understandable and comfortable for the client in their time of grief.

Firm Focus and History

My practice focuses on estate planning and probate. My goal with estate planning is to ensure that my clients set up a plan that will accomplish their goals should the unexpected happen. Just as important is that the clients understand the plan they have in place. Every family is different and so every client must be approached differently. My goal with probate is to ensure the process happens as efficiently as possible, but also to make the process as painless as it can be.

I began my practice in Arizona in 2010 immediately after separating honorably from the United States Air Force.

Previous Employment Summary

Prior to starting my practice in Arizona, I was a Judge Advocate for the United States Air Force. My time in the Air Force was truly great and I was privileged to serve with some of the best and most courageous people I have ever met. While in the Air Force I worked with over 1,300 clients on various legal issues and drafted over 700 comprehensive estate plans. It was a natural progression to practice this area of the law in the civilian world.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

Clients should always be educated on legal issues. Some clients prefer to research issues before speaking with a lawyer, while other clients allow the lawyer to educate them. I am happy to work with both types of client. It is critical to my work that my clients understand what I am doing.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am willing to review documents that clients prepare and will happily give my honest assessment of the same.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

If it is ethically possible to do so, I am open to it. Frankly, however, it does not always accomplish the goal of keeping costs down for the client.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I became a lawyer to be a prosecutor. I wanted to contribute to my community in a meaningful way, and providing honest and thorough representation to the state or federal government appealed to me. While in the Air Force, I was able to fulfill my goal of being a prosecutor and am very proud of what I accomplished in that capacity. What surprised me was how much I enjoyed estate planning. I value working with families to help them make many of the difficult decisions that we are all faced with.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I am married and have two young children. My family is very much like my clients' families. Before I deployed to Iraq, my family did not have any planning documents in place. The process forced me to look at the consequences of not having planned. Life is fragile and I had left my family vulnerable.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

While serving in the Air Force, many of my clients were young soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines who, if they weren't in the service, would not have been thinking about planning for what happens to their loved ones if they should pass. I've seen firsthand the effects of young families failing to plan and decided to craft a practice around helping them.

What do you like best about your career?

I did not go to law school envisioning a career helping people plan for the worst times in their lives. My family is the most important thing in my life, and most people I meet feel the same. The problem is that we do not always act accordingly. What I like best about what I do is that I get to help people take care of their families in a very real and concrete way.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a solo practitioner, so all of my clients deal directly with me.

What are your strengths and style?

I am analytical and compassionate. These two traits blend well in the very detail oriented processes of estate planning and probate. Very much like a doctor needs a good "bedside manner," an estate planning and probate lawyer needs to be able to work with clients in what is often one of the more difficult times in their lives.

Personal Interests:

My personal interests center on my family. I enjoy sports of all kinds, much to my wife's dismay, and am trying to pass on that love to my children. Unfortunately my daughter always roots against whichever team I am rooting for.
