Continuing Education
I attend continuing legal education seminars on topics of workers' compensation, civil litigation, personal injury and employment law. I always attend "live" seminars rather than online or taped courses and usually exceed the required number of hours.
Example Cases
Almaraz vs. R.C. Packing. An auto/big rig accident resulting in amputation and reattachment of left arm causing permanent total disability. The workers' compensation case was denied and the matter went to trial, appealed twice and eventually settled for $1,087,500.
Francisco Cruz vs. Casey Fogli. Another auto/big rig accident resulting in traumatic brain injury in which the employer denied liability in the workers' compensation claim and the defendants denied liability in the civil claim. Both went to trial in the two forums. The civil case settled for $3,058,000 and the workers' compensation claim settled for $1,590,962, plus lifetime 24-hour attendant care and medical care.
Calinawan vs. Monterey Sculpture Center. After being humiliated at work by his supervisor for his Filipino accent, characteristics and religious beliefs, the client was terminated under a "work performance" pretext. We went to trial on the discrimination issue and prevailed with a jury verdict of $50,000. It was not the amount of the verdict, but rather the vindication my client felt after a contentious jury trial. I received as much satisfaction from this "small" case as the other big cases I have litigated over the years.

Firm Focus and History
The Law Offices of Jeffrey L. Tade is a civil litigation firm specializing in personal injury, workers' compensation, employment, labor and civil rights law. After graduating from law school in 1986 and working for several litigation firms in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and San Jose, California, I returned to my hometown of Salinas, California and in 1994 established my current practice. For more the 24 years, I have honed my skills as a civil litigator, having successfully handled thousands of cases ranging from wrongful death claims, serious personal injury claims, workers' compensation, insurance bad faith, labor and employments disputes, civil rights and discrimination disputes, contracts and business disputes, intellectual property, construction defect, property and real estate disputes.
The depth and breadth of my knowledge and experience in the civil litigation arena, coupled with my philosophy of providing quality, effective and aggressive legal representation for my clients, remains the driving force behind my continued passion for the practice of law. The firm has a well-established track record of successfully litigating cases in various forums at the trial and appellate level.
Personal injury, workers' compensation, employment and civil rights litigation require a certain level of tenacity and the ability to overcome many challenges and obstacles unique to these areas of law. I am committed to representing only injury victims and their families who often find themselves particularly vulnerable against the nearly limitless resources of insurance companies.
I employ a pragmatic philosophy of trial advocacy by seeking prompt resolution of disputes through informal settlement, arbitration or mediation. To accomplish this goal, I meticulously and judiciously prepare each case as if it were to go to trial. While it is true that more than 90% of civil cases settle before trial, I believe that being prepared and willing to go the distance is the most effective way to achieve prompt resolution and to maximize settlement results.
The Law Offices of Jeffrey L. Tade is centrally located in Salinas, California and provides services to all California Central Coast communities, including Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito Counties.
Previous Employment Summary
Having started my career as an insurance defense attorney, I am fully aware of the tactics and practices employed by insurance carriers and employers to deny legitimate claims or minimize the nature and extent of those claims.
Activities and Awards
I occasionally serve as a private mediator and arbitrator in personal injury matters.
What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
I believe the attorney should educate the clients on the legal issues particularly where there are complex and disputed issues on liability, causation and damages. The client should educate themselves generally but ought to defer to the attorney for case-specific issues.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
I will review client-prepared documents. However, my experience is that by the time I complete my review, met with the client as to the intent and purpose of the document, and opine as to the contents of the documents, I could have simply prepared the document for the same fee.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
Not willing at all. Too problematic.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
Initially, it was the intellectual challenge of legal analysis. As I began my practice, I began to appreciate the power of knowing and understanding the law to help those who need it most.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
My experience as a defense attorney representing insurance companies has provided me with an inside look at the tactics and practices of insurance companies. With such a background, I am a better civil litigator representing injured plaintiffs and their families.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
I am committed to representing injury victims who find themselves extremely vulnerable against the vast resources of insurance companies who seek to deny and limit the amount of compensation to which the clients are entitled. The notion of fighting the good fight and seeking justice for those who cannot afford to pay attorneys fees up front gives me great satisfaction, and it is well appreciated by my clients.
What do you like best about your career?
Obtaining a satisfactory result for my clients who express a deep appreciation for my efforts.
Tell us about your law firm:

My staff shares my philosophy of treating clients with respect, courtesy and compassion as they help guide the clients through the complexities of the case.
What are your strengths and style?
My strength is my substantive knowledge and experience and the meticulous preparation I put into all of my cases. My style is aggressive in both subtle and not so subtle ways.
Personal Interests:
Golf and spending time with my family. I try to balance my time and appreciate the life I have outside of the office.
