In 2002, I opened my own firm in Boulder, Colorado. Although a primary area of practice is defending individuals accused of driving under the influence (DUI, DWAI, DUI-D), I have a varied criminal practice. I have been qualified and testified as an expert in criminal defense. I have obtained positive results for my clients on numerous sexual assault cases.
The State of Colorado hires me to represent indigent persons charged with criminal offenses who have a conflict with the Public Defender's office. I have been appointed to represent several people charged with Murder in the First Degree, taking several murder cases to trial. As a public defender, I won a Murder case.
I have experience with all types of cases (domestic violence DV, assaults, drug possession, theft, sex crimes), in courts from Hugo to Durango. My goal is to provide the best representation that can be found.
My practice is dedicated to helping individuals and small businesses. Too often, the government and large corporations are able to overwhelm the individual and small business because of their size and resources. I will fight for your cause against these powerful entities.
I currently represent a gentleman accused of sexual assault. The prosecution tried to deny his constitutional right to confront the witnesses against him. I was able to show the Court that the prosecutor did not properly follow the procedures.
In the last year or so, I have been able to get several DUI cases dismissed. In one, I successfully argued that the police destroyed exculpatory evidence, thereby violating my client's due process rights. In another, the judge agreed with my argument that the police did not have probable cause to arrest my client. In a third, the prosecutor agreed the police did not have sufficient reason to contact my client. In a fourth, the court dismissed the case after I demonstrated that the police did not follow required chemical testing procedures.
Further, in a recent DUI trial, the jury acquitted my client after I showed the police did not follow the correct procedures on SFSTs (roadside sobriety tests).
A few weeks ago, my client was acquitted by a jury of the felony of menacing a census worker with a deadly weapon. This was an important gun rights victory.

Criminal defense is the most interesting way to use a law degree. It is also the most personally satisfying. Most lawyers negotiate for large corporations and are bored. When I go to parties, we do not talk about tax laws or contracts, we discuss my work.
My philosophy is that a person with complete knowledge will always make a good decision for him or herself. It might not be the decision I would make, but it is right for that person.
This decision can only be the right decision with full knowledge. I believe it is my role to make sure my clients have all the knowledge they need to make their decisions. I encourage people to get information from various sources, but they need to discuss it with an attorney to make sure they understand it.
I have done this in the past and will continue to do so.
I would recommend against representing yourself. However, I have been advisory counsel and am willing to help people in any way I can.
I was a Colorado State Public Defender for about five years. I practiced in Colorado Springs for more than three years and in Adams County for the remainder. I also spent a short period of time in the Steamboat Springs Public Defender's office. This work prepared me for any criminal case imaginable. I have tried many cases in many jurisdictions.
I grew up in Louisiana, but have lived in nine different states. I have seen discrimination and racism up close and personal. I have worked my entire life, from mowing lawns to construction to waiting tables. I know what it is to do manual labor, service industry jobs and to run my own business. As a public defender, I saw how the poor and disadvantaged are treated. I saw how some people can manipulate the justice system to be a sword, rather than a shield. I know that if I do not defend the constitution, then its power fades. Protecting my clients' constitutional rights, protects everyone's rights, including my own. These experiences forged a strong will.
My joy comes from doing great work. I know that when I do great work and treat people fairly, rewards will follow. I have no desire to make money at the expense of my client's case. I do not give up.
Personal interests:Guitar, mountain biking, tennis, literature, and travel.
