Example Cases
New Port Richey, Pasco County - Client was arrested for Leaving the Scene of an Accident and his third (3rd) DUI within ten (10) years. The possible sentence for these offenses was more than five (5) years in Florida State Prison. The Attorneys at the Law Offices of Jason M. Melton demanded that the client's right to complete discovery be fulfilled, but also that he receive his day in court before a jury of his peers. Our lawyers also demanded that the client's constitutional speedy trial rights be enforced. The State Attorney's Office did not recognize technical problems with their LSA/ DUI charging document or indictment and was not able to proceed with this matter.
Result: DUI and Leaving the Scene of an Accident - DISMISSED.
Spring Hill, Hernando County - Clients were traveling from the mall and were broadsided by a negligent driver. Demands were made from the Law Offices of Jason M. Melton that our clients be fully compensated for the injuries suffered that day and all pain and suffering. Those injuries included neck and back injuries, fractures and future treatment. The full amount of insurance applicable in this case was recovered without the need for a lengthy lawsuit. The matter was concluded within ten (10) months of the accident.
Result: $200,000 - Policy Limits

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
A better informed client is always better off. However, the danger lies in where the information is obtained. There is so much drivel and badly thought out "legal" ideas on the internet and television, it's usually best to just ask your own attorney whatever questions you may have.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
In some cases (for example, contractual review), this is extremely important.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
Coaching or "Ghosting" cases is frowned upon by the Florida Bar and not a part of our practice.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
Being a lawyer was the best fit for my skill set, and around 16, it began to sink in that professional sports was not going to work out.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
I grew up in a household that was led by a non college-educated entrepreneur. The types of decisions, struggles and triumphs that come with such a household help make me a better man and better lawyer today.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
It was best suited with my personal background and former prosecutorial career experience.
What do you like best about your career?
Lawyers love to say "helping people". But, I really believe that the best part of the job is representing all types of people. We as lawyers get the greatest glimpse at the human story - all sides.
