I began focusing on family law full time about four or five years ago. The firm is now known as Evans Family Law Group, to be reflective of our core practice.
Family Law: divorce, adoptions, custody, protective orders, grandparents rights, modifications of divorce decrees and custody arrangements, child support, protective orders, alimony and spousal support, post divorce dissolution, prenuptial agreement and post nuptial agreements.
Mediated Divorce - Settled a six million dollar community estate without going to court once. I utilized a professional mediator to resolve the final property and child custody support case. I combined aggressive research on valuations, exacting discovery, and diplomacy to attend to the interests of the client to avoid court dispute and high tensions; to retain dignity.
Collaborative Divorce - Represented a professional and his wife in a collaborative divorce where the parties were able to privately settle their disputes outside of court. Through the use of third party professionals, including a psychologist and a business evaluator, all to determine the value of a closely held family business and a CPA to assist with taxes.
Collaborative Dissolution- Successfully obtained divorce for a couple through a collaborative process, but outside of the formal collaborative law process. The estate was worth over one million dollars.
Informal Marriage- Successfully defended a client from the claim of an "informal marriage" (common law marriage). The couple had lived together for nearly five years and the purported "wife" was claiming an interest in 1/2 of his business interests, alimony, spousal support, and child support in excess of $3,000. After a four day jury trial, the jury found no marriage existed and child support was set at guidelines of $1,500 per month.

Yes, we offer fixed or flat fees for clients so they can afford representation for what they actually need in the moment rather than requiring large retainers. I would be happy to offer a discount if they mention Nolo. However, the actual fees vary depending on the circumstances.

I really enjoy family law.
It is extremely important and what I propose is job number one for an attorney. My job is to educate clients and make sure they thoroughly understand the legal issues, process, and the ramifications of making certain strategic decisions. When asked, I advise them, but it's vital that clients have an educated understanding when they make a strategic decision.
I will review client's documents at any time. However, it is easier and cheaper had I drafted from the beginning. So as not to have to take time to understand the situation, read through a document which we have to then discuss, and explain why it likely does not truly do what they thought it would do. Or it does not go far enough and it would have been faster to have drafted it from the beginning from my own personal library.
I have no issue with this, it is a client's right. I term this a "ghosting" legal relationship. However, it has to be managed carefully and documented very carefully so there is a clear understanding of the attorney's role.
I practiced with the District Attorney's office in Tarrant County for nearly five years. I was recruited in to a commercial litigation firm (Hill Gilstrap) and did commercial litigation for two years. I opened a solo practice for two years and then entered into the partnership known as Evans & Peek in July 2003 which dissolved April 1, 2010.
Significant political experience. However, nothing teaches you more than being married, and being the dad of a 5 and 6 year old, the hard knocks of being in court. I have over one hundred jury trials; after a while you learn a thing or two.
I am creative and can think outside the box; parenthood; strong litigation background and skills; I enjoy litigating as much as negotiating and settling. I help people keep a strong sense of balance between choosing fights or litigation wisely and putting things to bed. My favorite family law mantra now is, "just because you can, doesn't mean you should."
Personal interests:I enjoy movies, playing with my children, being with my family, traveling, scuba diving, and church.
