Firm Focus and History
The Law Office of Gwen J. Cryer, Attorney at Law, was established in 2005. I began my own practice after having worked for the Office of the Public Defender, Ninth Judicial Circuit, for three and a half years. I opened my own practice to have more control over the number of cases I handle, and the quality of representation I can provide people. I do not have paralegals, partners, associates, or assistants handle matters that should be handled by me, your attorney.
My practice began as a criminal defense firm, but expanded to include domestic relations/family matters, in order to provide more cohesive representation for many of my clients. Oftentimes someone charged with a crime will have custody or other domestic issues arising out of the same criminal incident. My practice now includes dissolutions of marriage, paternity cases, modification and enforcement of domestic relations orders, and injunctions.
Previous Employment Summary
I was employed with the Office of the Public Defender, Ninth Judicial Circuit, soon after law school. I initially handled misdemeanors and criminal traffic infractions (DUIs), and was then promoted to a Felony Division. While many criminal defense attorneys were on the other side of the courtroom at some point in their career (as prosecutors), I became an attorney to defend people.
My prior experience in family law consists of my employment with the Family Law Center in New York, New York, where I worked on domestic cases. I was licensed as an attorney in New York State prior to my admission to the Florida Bar.
What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
Criminal Defense: Oftentimes, people are searched, and make statements incriminating themselves, because they are not educated on their rights. I, of course, encourage the public to know your rights regarding such issues. If you have been charged with a crime, contact an attorney to review your case regarding your rights and other legal issues. Family Law: Many people opt to go pro se (without an attorney) in domestic matters, without realizing the far-reaching consequences of a single injunction or domestic relations hearing. If you plan to go it alone, please educate yourself as much as possible regarding what is at stake in your case.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
I review any and all documents prepared by my clients and submitted to me. The only documents that should be submitted to the Court or to the opposing side are those reviewed or prepared by your attorney.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
I would advise anyone who has a case pending in criminal or domestic court to have an attorney representing them.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
I decided to become a Criminal Defense and Family Law attorney because it provides a means for me to directly help individuals, in a personal face-to-face, challenging, and dynamic way.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
As for my legal education, I attended Cardozo School of Law, home of the Innocence Project, the national wrongful conviction organization. I learned there what bad lawyering combined with an unjust system can mean for the innocent. Also while at law school, I became a Certified Family Mediator. I continue to take legal education classes to stay up to date on the laws, which are ever-changing.
On a professional level, I have worked for the New York City Department of Probation, the U.S. Department of Justice Drug Court Standards Committee, the Family Law Center, LLC in New York, NY, and the Office of the Public Defender, Ninth Judicial Circuit, prior to opening my solo practice in 2005. I have represented literally thousands of clients.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
Criminal Defense and Family Law are, in my opinion, the two areas of law subject to the highest stakes—your liberty and your family. Oftentimes, those two things go hand in hand, so I handle both areas of law in order to most effectively represent my clients. It is gratifying to help people in such an important way.
What do you like best about your career?
There are so many moments of reward in my field, from small victories within a case, to that moment when a verdict is rendered in favor of my client. But ultimately, my career is about helping people through their most difficult and stressful situations, and that is what I like best.

As a solo practitioner, all of my clients deal directly with me.
What are your strengths and style?
Being a Criminal Defense and Family Law attorney requires knowledge of the laws and skill in the courtroom, but it also mandates concern for individuals in times of crisis. I believe everyone deserves a zealous advocate working for them, who won’t judge them or discount them for any mistakes they may have made. My greatest strength is my concern for the individual.
Personal Interests:
Other than my career as an attorney, my other interests include spending time with my family, and enjoying the Florida outdoors.
