Firm Focus and History

My firm represents families for almost every legal issue with which they may normally come into contact. We want to be the family attorney you can turn to when you need help. We are there from the beginning of the marriage, through the adoption or birth of child, through the creation of wills and trusts, and sometimes through the unfortunate dissolution of the marriage. We are there in times of crisis when the family is having difficulty raising the children and must deal with the Courts on various issues. And when the family sees times of sorrow, they can call us for assistance with the probate of an estate.

Previous Employment Summary

My firm was established in 2008 as a solo law firm. I was previously an associate at my family's law firm. I decided that in order for me to grow as an attorney, I needed to be on my own, as any child must leave the nest. Since then, my firm has grown so much that we now have a support staff of two. It has been an exciting three years, and I am looking forward to continued growth and learning.

Activities and Awards

I practiced law at my family's firm (The Hoffman Firm) from 2002 to 2008. Prior to practicing law, I was employed in technology and business management, working in the legal industry since 1994.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I believe clients should research the legal issues from authoritative sources as much as possible in order to assist in their case; however, clients must understand that knowing the laws and being able to apply them in the court of jurisdiction are two different subjects. A skilled attorney brings with them the ability to analyze the case both in terms of the law and in terms of the players in the case, including the judge, the opposing counsel, and the parties. Clients should not allow their research to undermine the lawyer’s experience in assessing the case; at the same time, clients should speak up for themselves if they believe an important factor is being overlooked.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

It usually saves money to allow me to prepare the documents myself, because I will use my own forms which I am already familiar with, rather than spending time re-writing.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I will not do this.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I wanted to have my own business and I needed a skill to do so. I had a knack for getting answers for people and resolving issues, so it seemed to be a natural field for me.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

The school of life has proven to be my best educator. I had a child when I was single and in college. When my daughter was 8 years old, I got married, and later became pregnant, but that marriage ended soon thereafter. Ten years and a prenuptial agreement later, I am now married to another man who is absolutely wonderful to me. We both have grandchildren, and have planned our estates to manage the "blended" family issues facing many families. I have personally lived almost every circumstance that my clients may come across in their cases. These experiences allow me to empathize with the emotional side of their cases, which helps me connect and be a better advocate for their legal issues. I truly understand and care about their families.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

It chose me.

What do you like best about your career?

I enjoy knowing that I make a positive difference in the lives of my clients. When I get hugs at the end of a case, or a thank you card from my client, I know that I have helped someone get through a tough time and made things a little easier for them.

Tell us about your law firm:

In my office, we try to work as a team as much as possible. I have a paralegal and a law clerk. Both of them are familiar with most of my cases, and assist my clients however possible. My paralegal is vital to my practice, and is quite knowledgeable in her work. She has a Bachelor's Degree and Certificate in Paralegal Studies, and is able to help clients when I am not available.

What are your strengths and style?

My strengths are forming a strategy in the beginning of the case with my client, advising my client up front how to manage the case in the most cost-effective way, and giving them the choice how to proceed. My style is strong but compassionate.

Personal Interests:

I enjoy adventures, whether it be through travel, or life. I enjoy learning new things, and trying things I haven't tried before. My family is very important to me, and I spend a lot of my time doing things for them.

Nolo's Licensing Check

Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any state licensing agency.
