Firm Focus and History
My focus is on estate planning, wills and trusts, probate, family law, bankruptcy, business litigation , and litigation involving property damage. I also work as a mediator for the court and in private practice. I pride myself in being able to accurately assess my client's needs and form a practical plan to achieve those needs. I keep in close contact with my clients so that they are an informed participant in the process. If opposing counsel is involved I stay focused on the law and the facts and finding a practical solution to the conflict while treating all parties with respect.
I began my mediation practice in 1995 and my law practice in 2000. I have always worked as a sole practitioner. My prior business experience gives me the confidence to take on big projects and creatively reach results that are good for my client.
Previous Employment Summary
In 1975, after 3 years of world travel I formed an import clothing business. It included a Santa Barbara retail store and for 25 years operated as a national wholesale outlet. I took part in the management of the business and the design and distribution of the products. My duties included national and international travel meeting with customers and vendors as well as international banking and import/export requirements. The company produced 2 to 4 new product lines a year and was in the creativity mode throughout it's history.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
I encourage and support self help to the limits of an individual's desire and ability. It is an absolute necessity in Family Law matters.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
I often review documents prepared by clients and suggest edits as necessary.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
Depending on my assessment of a client's ability I would encourage them to represent themselves, especially in Family Law matters.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
I have always been gifted in communication and in resolving conflict. The principles of law and justice have attracted me since college. Following my career in business I was introduced to mediation which impressed me as a wonderful, practical problem solving tool. I soon revisited my interest in law as an additional tool in problem solving and I use these skills to help people solve problems and achieve goals.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
My business, travel, and mediation experience make me more able to listen, communicate, and act for the best interests of my clients.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
I enjoy Estate Planning in that it can proactively avoid future family and other problems. Family Law as it deals with a necessary and important element in an individual's life. General litigation gives me a chance to bring a new approach to often long standing problems.
