Continuing Education
Hawaii's law regarding vehicle claims is quite complicated. It has changed significantly since January 1, 1998. I have kept up with these changes by attending seminars and subscribing to publications both local and national. Being informed will help me explain to you how the current laws impact your case. In addition, I attend continuing educational seminars on various topics that pertain to personal injury.

Firm Focus and History
The Recovery Law Center is a specialty law firm in Honolulu, Hawaii. We offer legal services to help people with injury from a car accident or other accident. Our goal is to achieve the best recovery for your personal injuries. By "recovery" we mean more than just a money settlement or personal injury compensation. We are committed to helping you recover from your physical and emotional injury. In addition to injuries from car accidents our firm has represented, fought and succeeded in obtaining compensation for many who suffered injuries due to assaults, unsafe conditions, defective products and slip & falls.
Over the last 15 years, my practice has always focused on representing personal injury claimants. I have helped hundreds of clients recover settlements for injuries, and other damages, that they sustained through no fault of their own. Although a smaller firm, we have gone head-to-head successfully with the biggest insurance defense law firms in this state.
Previous Employment Summary
Prior to founding the Recovery Law Center, I was an associate attorney at the law firm of Jervis & Winer (later becoming Jervis, Winer & Meheula). I later became a partner in the law firm of Jervis, Pico & Honda.
Activities and Awards
I was twice awarded Consumer Business Review's "Personal Injury Attorney of the Year," for 1998 and 1999.
What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
I feel that it is very important for clients to be educating themselves on legal issues. For this reason clients would be able to make better decisions regarding their case and, have some insight when visiting an attorney for the first time.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
I am very willing to review documents that clients have prepared. I would rather documents be prepared correctly from the start rather than trying to correct documents which can lead to additional time consumption and costs.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
I always encourage clients to pursue their own first party workers compensation cases.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
I wanted to be a lawyer because I wanted to stand up for the "little" guys (and gals). I wanted to be sure that every voice was heard, big or small!
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
I was injured in a terrible car accident requiring a total of three major surgeries. I can fully understand and empathize with those who have been injured in a car accident through no fault of their own. Insurance companies sometimes make it difficult for you to get the treatment you need. They may create "roadblocks," and, try to force you and your doctor to "jump through hoops."
The Recovery Law Center will deal with the insurance company on your behalf and fight for your rights. I want you to focus on your recovery. I will help you complete the numerous forms which "they" demand and I will prepare you for depositions and other verbal statements.
When you legally qualify to make a personal injury claim, our team will compile all of the records and other documents needed to submit your claim to the insurance company. After a thorough evaluation, I will write a comprehensive demand and settlement letter for your claim and submit it to the defendant or his insurance carrier.
In Hawaii, most injury claims must submit to an initial hearings process called the Court Annexed Arbitration Program (CAAP) before a case can be heard by a jury. At the CAAP hearing, an attorney-arbitrator will hear all of the evidence and make a decision and/or award based on the evidence. Many cases end at this point. However, each side has the right to appeal the CAAP arbitrator's decision. Whoever decides to appeal the decision must do so carefully, because the CAAP rules require the side that appeals to obtain a better award than they did at the CAAP level, or, face penalties. If your case proceeds to trial, our team will spend considerable time preparing you, both from a factual standpoint and for your comfort level. I will work very hard to get you the best results possible, and, will work with other lawyers/law firms if necessary.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
I have always been one to help others thanks to my upbringing as well as my faith. For this reason, I choose to focus on personal injury. I am told by others that I "fight for the underdog" and I truly do. I am here for all clients who are inured and will not "back down" from pursuing your claim, no matter how big, or powerful, the defendant's legal representation. My vision was always to provide the benefits of small firm personal attention, while still having the strength and resources to vigorously pursue your claim. 15 years later and my vision remains as strong as ever.
What do you like best about your career?
The satisfaction of being a part of a person's recovery, both physical and emotional.
