Continuing Education
I attend seminars on various immigration topics throughout the year, and also attend the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) annual convention every year. I always exceed, by a very large number, the required number of continuing education hours.
Example Cases
I've been doing this for quite some time and I've been fortunate enough to have experienced many successes. Some of the more recent are obtaining a 212(h) waiver in immigration court for a young man who had fallen in with the wrong crowd and was on the verge of being deported at the time I was retained. He is an only child and the waiver saved his green card so he could continue to live in the U.S. with his mother.
I also recently obtained political asylum for a family who had been fighting their case in various courts for almost ten years.
On the employment-based side of things, I have successfully appealed several denied I-140s, enabling my clients, and their families, to successfully obtain their green cards based on a job offer in the U.S. This is both good for families and good for the economy.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
I am a huge believer in self-help when it is appropriate. One of my primary goals during a consultation is to determine whether the prospective client is able to do all or part of their case without having to hire an attorney.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
I am very willing to review documents my clients or prospective clients prepare. This is part of my self-help philosophy.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
If I conclude that the client's legal matter is something they can handle themselves with a little coaching from me, I am very willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
It was mostly accidental, actually. Both of my parents are judges, so I spent most of my time growing up trying to avoid a legal career. Shortly after I graduated from college, a friend of mine asked me to go take the Law School Admissions Test with him. It was literally a five minute walk from where I worked, so I said "why not?" My score was so high I decided to apply to a few law schools, just to see what would happen. I was accepted at USC and my parents convinced me it would be very dumb not to take advantage of that opportunity, so I went to law school. As it turns out, this was all a very happy accident. I love being an immigration lawyer.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
Being raised by two judges has given me some insight into judicial temperament and the judicial process that have been very helpful to me, particularly as a trial and appellate advocate.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
This was also accidental. My first job in an immigration firm was actually as a Federal trial lawyer. The attorney who owned the firm had filed several lawsuits against the INS and needed an attorney with litigation experience to handle them. After a while, he started assigning me more "traditional" immigration cases. The rest, as they say, is history.
What do you like best about your career?
I love legal challenges and I love crafting persuasive legal arguments. I also love seeing the joy on my clients' faces when I win their case and help them realize their dream of living in the United States. I go through a lot of tissue in my office. Most of the tears being soaked up are tears of joy. Most of the tissue is used by my clients, but I admit some of it is used by me as well. I know of no other area of law that offers this.
Tell us about your law firm:
I am currently the only attorney at the firm, so all of our clients deal directly with me. However, I also have a wonderful staff. My office manager has been with me for 10 years and my legal secretary has been with me for 8 years. I also have two marvelous paralegals and a wonderful receptionist, all of whom are very knowledgeable, caring and sensitive to our clients' needs, and love immigration law almost as much as I do.
What are your strengths and style?
I am very goal-oriented and also emphasize a team approach to handling all matters in my office. I love talking to my clients, learning about their lives and their immigration issues, and helping them achieve their goals.
Personal Interests:
I am a huge college football fan (Go Trojans!) but also love to read, ride my bike (particularly my mountain bike, when time and weather permit) and spend time with my family.

Fixed-Price Services and Fees
I do offer flat-fee retainers, but I do not have a "price list." I believe every case is different and I want to analyze each case before I quote a fee.
Hourly Rates
I do, occasionally, charge an hourly rate. When I do, it is $275.
Free Initial Consultation?
I offer a free 30-minute initial consultation.
Typical Retainer
The typical range is from $2,500 to $7,500. That range covers probably 80-90% of the cases in my office. Typical terms are a deposit to start the case, and monthly payments for the balance. That general repayment structure covers probably 70-80% of the cases in my office.
Nolo's Licensing Check
Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the state agency that licenses lawyers upon joining the directory.
Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any state licensing agency.
