Firm Focus and History

I worked as a criminal prosecutor in the Douglas County Attorney's Office in Omaha, Nebraska. In September of 2007, I decided to leave my job as a criminal prosecutor and open The Law Office of Eric R. Chandler. In 2009, Becky Hanson joined the office as a legal assistant. Since then, Becky and I, along with occasional help from other local area attorneys, have focused all of our energy on helping people who have either been injured in a car accident or have been arrested on criminal charges.

My law office focuses on personal injury and criminal defense law. We specialize in car accident injury cases, serious criminal charges and DUI defense.

Previous Employment Summary

Before starting my own law practice, I was a criminal prosecutor. I worked in the Douglas County Attorney's Office, which handles the prosecution of all felony and domestic violence crimes in Douglas County, Nebraska (Omaha, Elkhorn, Millard, etc.). I spent the majority of my time as a prosecutor in the domestic violence unit. For a small amount of time in 2006 I was involved in the prosecution of pretty much every domestic violence crime in the Omaha area.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I think it is human nature to want to understand processes that you are involved in, and I think it is very important to have an understanding of the court process and what you are going through as a client. On the other hand, a client cannot possibly expect to know or completely understand every single court process or case strategy involved. If they did, there would be no reason to hire an attorney. That is why it is so important for a client to find a lawyer they feel comfortable with and can trust.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

My practice focuses almost entirely on personal injury and criminal defense cases, so it is not often that clients bring me documents to review. With that said, generally speaking, I have no problem reviewing client documents when requested to do so.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I am not willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves. I think it is a bad idea for everyone involved, and often times it is at odds with attorney ethical standards. It is also dangerous for the client because they are getting advice from an attorney who is not willing to put their name behind it.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I never really intended to be a lawyer. I was a business major in undergraduate school, and I wanted a legal education to give me a broader perspective on things. I ended up working as a law clerk for some judges while in law school and the next thing I knew I was in trial on an assault case. I enjoy being a lawyer for many reasons, but the thing I probably enjoy the most is getting to provide my client's side of the story. Often times people forget, but whether it is someone who is injured in a car accident and is fighting with an insurance company or someone who is alleged to have committed a crime, everyone has their own version of what took place.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I think all life experiences make you better at whatever job you do. Working as a prosecutor before opening my own law office allowed me to gain significant jury trial experience and has been extremely helpful in making me a better lawyer. I had the privilege of spending more time in court in one year than many other trial attorneys experience in ten. Starting out with a job in the courthouse also allowed me to get to know people who I still deal with on a daily basis.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

My primary areas of practice came naturally to me. After I fell into my job as a prosecutor, criminal defense law was an easy choice. As far as personal injury work, prosecuting personal injury cases for persons injured in car accidents is very similar to prosecuting a criminal case. Both areas of practice involve trial work and a great amount of time in the courtroom. I enjoy meeting with clients, I enjoy helping people out of jams, and I enjoy going to court and being a part of the courthouse community.

What do you like best about your career?

I like many things about my career. I love interacting with people, I love developing relationships with my clients, I enjoy helping people who are at a tough place in their life and I love the freedom and flexibility of private practice.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a solo practitioner, so all of my clients deal directly with me and have immediate access to me most of the time. Becky is my wonderful legal assistant who is there to field client questions and calls when I am out of the office or in court. Becky also plays a huge part in gathering documents for cases and helping to put together client's personal injury files. We use multiple interpreters, however, most of our Spanish speaking clients will at some point meet Mr. Ruben Cortez. Ruben is a great help to both us and our clients, and he does a great job of making himself easily accessible.

What are your strengths and style?

My style as a lawyer is very upfront. I like to be honest with my clients from the start; it makes my life easier and it makes their life easier. Typically, I only handle two types of cases, either criminal or car accident, which means I am able to focus entirely on those two areas of the law.

Personal Interests:

I have many personal interests, but one of my biggest interests outside of my family is basketball. When I am not spending time with my wife and daughter, you will likely find me playing or coaching basketball. I have coached junior high basketball at St. Roberts in Omaha, Nebraska since 2003.

Office Hours

Monday through Friday
9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
However, it is a good idea to schedule appointments in advance as often times our office closes early near holidays or when I am in trial.

We have an emergency line for individuals that have just been arrested or injured in an accident. Also, clients have access to my work cell phone in case a situation arises outside of normal business hours.

Emergency After Hours

Yes

Foreign Languages

No permanent members of this office are fluent in any other languages than English. However, we do have access to multiple interpreters who work for us on an independent contractor basis. Our office often handles injury cases for individuals who are only Spanish speaking.

Fixed-Price Services and Fees

All of our services are either for handling of injury claims or defense of criminal charges. Attorney fees for motor vehicle injury cases are paid on a contingent basis. Our office does not get paid unless the client gets paid. Almost all criminal defense cases, including DUI, are billed at a flat rate. The client and I will agree on a flat fee within the first few meetings that suits the specific facts of that person’s case. Then a payment schedule will be set up accordingly. Often times, there is a flat rate for pretrial attorney services, and an additional amount paid if and when a case proceeds to trial.

Hourly Rates

More often than not, we are paid on a contingency fee basis or based on an agreed upon flat rate.

Free Initial Consultation?

We do offer a free consultation on all car accident and criminal defense cases. Free consultations are 30 minutes long. We just ask that you call and schedule you appointment in advance.

Typical Retainer

It depends on the case. As mentioned above, personal injury cases, including car accident injury cases, are taken on a contingency fee basis. In other words, no money is paid at all unless and until the client recovers. Criminal cases are typically taken on a flat fee schedule. The fee charged depends on the type of case and the facts surrounding arrest. For example, on a D.U.I. first offense, the fee will likely be between $800 and $1,200 depending on the facts and the location of arrest.

Understanding Fees

Nolo's Licensing Check

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the state agency that licenses lawyers upon joining the directory.

Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any state licensing agency.
