Firm Focus and History

My firm's principal focus is on major personal injury and wrongful death cases. We also handle business-related and insurance coverage disputes. I established this firm in 1980. We have handled cases throughout California since then.

Previous Employment Summary

Before starting my own firm, I worked as an associate and later as a partner in three successive Los Angeles-based civil litigation firms. The mix of cases was generally similar to what I handle now.

Activities and Awards

I took assignments as a judicial arbitrator in the San Francisco County Superior Court system for approximately 10 years. I have been AV-rated by Martindale Hubbell for 25 years.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I always encourage this, if the client is interested in doing so, but I do not force it. Knowing the law is my job.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I will always review them if requested to do so. I will insist on it if they are crucial to our case.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I generally do not do this. Representing clients is my job.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I started my working career as an engineer with a major manufacturing corporation, but eventually found the work unfulfilling and often driven by corporate politics. I decided to attend law school and become a trial lawyer because I felt that work would better fit my interests and my competitive needs. This was a good move.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

My degree in mechanical engineering and my work thereafter in the manufacturing industry, along with my competitive nature as a scholarship football athlete in college and a club lacrosse player for 13 years after that, have contributed to my skills and track record as a trial lawyer. As a once practicing engineer I can usually evaluate and explain how accidents happen and how products malfunction. I believe also that the competitive drive I developed and as an athlete help me as well.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I enjoy the challenge of being a trial lawyer. It is of course not combat, but it is competitive and this is what drives me to succeed.

What do you like best about your career?

Winning and settling cases favorably for deserving and appreciative clients; having the respect of my opponents and colleagues.

Tell us about your law firm:

We are a firm of three partners and five experienced associate attorneys who work well together. Subject to conferring with the client I make all final decisions on matters which I am handling. I am also very fortunate to have a fine office administrator, a competent and experienced secretary, and a generally capable staff.

What are your strengths and style?

My strengths are in explaining my client's case in simple and believable terms, and in persuading juries that I am presenting an honest picture of my client's case without omissions or exaggeration.

Personal Interests:

Working out, running, some spectator sports, reading, and auto racing events (I raced previously owned sports cars for many years at the club level, but have retired from that). I enjoy my time off, but my energy and principal focus remain directed to my law practice.

Understanding Fees

Nolo's Licensing Check

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the state agency that licenses lawyers upon joining the directory.

Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any state licensing agency.
