Firm Focus and History

My firm is focused on providing representation to individuals to protect their rights as citizens, tenants, or consumers. I started my own practice in October of 2010.

Previous Employment Summary

I practiced as an associate for several years at an Oakland based law firm, where I specialized in the prosecution of complex state Qui Tam actions. My experience also includes defending the criminally accused in cases ranging from misdemeanor and felony drug-related offenses, including DUI charges, to assault and battery.

Activities and Awards

I was named a "Rising Star" by SuperLawyers and San Francisco Magazine three years in a row (2009, 2010 and 2011). I provide Pro Bono Services for Bay Area Legal Aid and the Alameda County Bar Association and I also serve as a referral attorney for the Aids Legal Referral Panel.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I always strive to educate my clients regarding the law and all their options. However, I believe a client's efforts to educate themselves on legal issues results in a tremendous benefit to the client as well as the attorney. The client is able to make more informed choices concerning their case. In turn, the attorney is able to devote more time towards preparing the case and advocating for the client, rather than spending time explaining the more basic concepts related to the client's case.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am available and willing to review documents prepared by clients. In some matters, I suggest doing this, as it can be a more practical and affordable option for clients.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I am available to provide assistance and direction to individuals who wish to litigate or handle certain limited legal matters without an attorney. However, in many circumstances, I believe that it is important for the client to be represented by an attorney and will advise them accordingly.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I wanted a challenging and interesting career that would also help protect the rights of individuals. I wanted to be an attorney for the "underdog" and feel like the services I provided were not only means for making a living, but also provided real help to those who needed it.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I come from a working class background where my brother and I were the first in our family to graduate from college and go on to be professionals. This often assists me in identifying my client's concerns as their attorney, by enabling me to view their legal matters from their perspective and background.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I wanted to represent to individuals in areas of law that involved their basic rights and immediate living situations, such as the threat of criminal conviction or eviction.

What do you like best about your career?

I like the intellectual and adversarial challenges presented in the practice of law, from the creative use of procedural rules, to developing strategies for discovery or trial as tactics for prevailing at trial or leverage in any settlement. I also enjoy getting to know my clients and having the opportunity to help them in difficult and trying circumstances.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a solo practitioner. All my clients interact with me personally, making me intimately familiar with my cases and clients. This allows me to keep my clients promptly and thoroughly informed of all issues and developments in their case.

What are your strengths and style?

I believe in being reasonable in all aspects of litigation. This avoids many of the pitfalls associated with litigation, such as protracted and sometimes expensive legal battles over discovery or other issues that are not focal to the case. While clients understandably want an aggressive advocate on their behalf, I believe that it is important that such advocacy be part of a cohesive strategy aimed at resolving a matter to my client's satisfaction or prevailing at trial.

Personal Interests:

In my spare time, I enjoy scuba diving, boxing (watching it more so as I get older), playing guitar and traveling.

Nolo's Licensing Check
