What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
I feel it is very important for clients to understand their legal rights and to continue to educate themselves on important legal issues. This is why my firm has written more books on accident, injury, and medical malpractice lawsuits than any other law firm in Michigan. We not only provide free legal books and information on all different types of accidents to the public, but we maintain a superior website with frequently refreshed content that includes downloadable, no-cost legal forms and educational videos. We provide this valuable information for free to consumers so that they can better understand their legal rights and know how to seek justice through our legal system.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
I regularly review and edit documents prepared by my clients.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
I understand that not all cases require an attorney to settle. You definitely do not need an attorney for every small personal injury case. I don't even accept cases where the injuries are minor because in a small case the attorney fee and costs might leave little or nothing for you after your medical bills are paid, and I do not believe that would be fair to you. In this scenario, I would recommend a person not hire an attorney and I would give them advice on how to represent themselves.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
Both of my parents were attorneys and started the law firm of Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. in 1968. Watching them represent injured clients successfully and seeing the respect, integrity, and sense of enrichment that came into their lives after helping an injured victim and their family, prompted me to become a personal injury lawyer.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
My work with victims of serious injuries and their families has made me a better and more understanding lawyer. I am involved with several organizations for injury victims, like the Brain Injury Association of Michigan, and work closely with nurse case managers and physicians. This has helped me understand how important my role is in the road to recovery for my clients and has made me a much better lawyer.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
Growing up, I saw how my parents had such positive effects on the lives of their clients and how these people needed the legal system to help them through their tough times. I decided early on in my career that I wanted to dedicate my professional life to making the legal system work for accident and injury victims.
What do you like best about your career?
Bringing justice to victims of personal injury accidents and helping injured victims and their families get their life back on track. Being successful also allows us to get involved in the community and give back.
I have a strong commitment to the communities I serve. I strongly believe in the importance of contributing to local groups and organizations dedicated to improving the lives of accident and injury victims. Some of the great organizations I am involved in include Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), The Michigan Brain Injury Association, and The American Cancer Society.
Tell us about your law firm:
Our personal injury law firm consists of a top team of lawyers and support staff. All of our attorneys handle only serious accident and injury cases, and each has their own top track record of successful settlements and verdicts. Our attorneys are very accessible to our clients and our support staff provides great assistance to the attorneys to help achieve our top results.
What are your strengths and style?
I believe that I have excellent listening skills and strong communication skills. Unlike many lawyers who like to do all of the talking, I spend a lot of my time listening to my clients. This enables me to understand their problems and concerns so that I can focus my representation on their most important needs. I am also very passionate about my work and dedicated to doing the best possible job for the clients that I represent.
Personal Interests:
Outside of work, I like to spend time with my family. I am an avid sports fan and enjoy attending Detroit Tiger games and ballgames in other cities and minor league parks.
