Continuing Education
I regularly attend continuing education classes in the three states in which I practice law. These classes, as well as matrimonial committee meetings and attorney meetings, afford me updates in law and legal proceedings; They help keep my practice current and me knowledgeable on pending legislation and adoption of new laws, unique resolutions to complex issues, and preferred courtroom practices.
I always exceed the required amount of classes and credits in all three states in which I practice law.
Example Cases
My typical cases include contested and uncontested divorces, child support, child custody, and paternity matters. I spend a good deal of time representing my clients in family court in the various boroughs of New York as well as in the states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Firm Focus and History
The focus of my firm is in matrimonial and family law. This includes prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, separation agreements, divorce settlements and litigation, paternity actions, and child custody and child support cases. I work closely with my clients on a one-on-one basis to ensure they receive the most competent legal service in terms they can understand. I take them through the legal process so they can be aware of the role their attorney will play in these highly personal legal matters.
The Law Offices of Bonnie L. Mohr was established in January 2004, soon after completion of law school in 2003, and admission to practice in the states of New York and New Jersey. I expanded my practice to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 2008 after passing the bar exam in that state.
Previous Employment Summary
While in New York Law School, I worked as an intern for Jacobson and Colfin, PC, an intellectual property firm specializing in music business, copyright, trademarks, and litigation. Upon admission to practice law in New York, and while setting up my own practice, I served as "of counsel" to Bruce Colfin and Jeffrey Jacobson. I prepared trademark and copyright applications, reviewed music business and publishing contracts, litigated in the Federal Court for the Southern District of New York, and drafted annual corporate meeting documents and operating agreements for limited liability companies.
I also worked with Leatha Sturges, of the Law Offices of Leatha J. Sturges, a general practice firm. I worked on real estate transactions, estate planning and administration, and family court and post-divorce judgment matters.
Activities and Awards
I spent my available time in pro bono training of interns in both Jacobson & Colfin,PC and Law Offices of Leatha J. Sturges so that law students serving as interns would be able to report on "real life" experiences in legal matters.
What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
Education is always a good thing, and research may be a good way to get a basic understanding of the law and legal issues. There are volumes of information available on the internet, which today seems to be the preferred avenue of investigation into matters legal. However, much of this information may only be updated slowly, and may no longer be appropriate. The law is constantly changing and the laws are state specific. After exploring the legal issues, I do believe that it is important and appropriate to involve an attorney of one’s own choosing, one to which a client can relate and feel comfortable, one that provides a “good fit” for their particular case. This team of client/attorney can then explore the issues and develop their own legal strategies that best work in their particular case.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
I am more than willing to review documents prepared by clients or other attorneys, provided they are consistent and relevant in the area in which I practice law.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
I am willing to consult at all stages of the legal process with clients who wish to represent themselves, but in cases like this my scope of representation would be limited to only consultation. A client must have sufficient understanding of the legal process and the applicable laws that govern their action in order to represent themselves. Without a retained attorney, a client will be unable to ask questions while in court, and he or she must be able to relate precise facts and events back to their coach to accurately plan the next course of action. This tends to make coaching difficult and oftentimes ineffective for many of the legal actions.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
I have always found the legal system, courtroom procedures, and laws to be intriguing and challenging. As a child of television, the courtroom dramas were a particular favorite of mine. I saw myself in the role of courtroom lawyer, negotiator, and white knight (or black knight, depending upon which side you’re on) to those in need of legal help. I pursued that challenge and do, in fact, enjoy that role. I am happy with my ability to practice law in three states and still have the ability to add more should I choose to do so. There aren’t a lot of careers that allow an individual to be that flexible, and there are people everywhere in need of legal assistance.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
In addition to being a lawyer, I am also a martial artist and I do teach martial arts. The martial arts require focus, control, strength of character, and physical energy, all of which can, and are, applied to my law practice. This has also given me the self assurance needed to perform as a lawyer and representative of my clients.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
I chose matrimonial and family law because it is more focused on individuals and the more sensitive aspects of their lives. It allows me to represent them and resolve issues that are life altering, and it challenges my abilities as a negotiator and mediator. It lends a sense of what is fair and just, and makes one take a long, hard look at the laws and their applicability to each individual case. It provides the challenge to be creative and strategize to get the best deals for all of my clients.
What do you like best about your career?
My career is about people, and that’s the best part. It’s the interaction with clients and the ability to resolve multitudes of issues to their satisfaction. It is knowing that when I step into a courtroom, I have the respect of both the client and the court. I am secure in my knowledge of the law and the best practices both in and out of court. I enjoy the challenges I find in all my cases, from prenuptials to contested divorces and child custody cases.
Tell us about your law firm:
I am a solo practitioner, and I deal one-on-one with all my clients. I have access to other attorneys who practice law in other venues, so there are always the possibilities of cross referrals and advice on issues that are beyond the scope of law that I practice. My office manager, Gerson, is also there to lend another pair of hands and can work as a Spanish-to-English translator.
What are your strengths and style?
I am self-assured, confident, and knowledgeable about the laws that govern marital and family actions. I work very closely with my clients and insist that they feel comfortable with me as their legal representative, or they can certainly feel free to find another attorney. I like to ensure that I educate clients in the legal implications and ramifications of their potential agreements in a language they understand better than legalese, and make certain that these agreements work for them and fulfill their needs.
