Preferred New Clients
I prefer clients who share my interest in "righting wrongs" rather than settling scores. In the employment context, I am particularly interested in clients who have suffered discrimination in the workplace due to no fault of their own and have found themselves in the unfortunate position of being harassed or subject to a hostile work environment; not being hired or promoted; or worse yet demoted or fired, for unlawful and retaliatory reasons. I accept clients before, during, and after they have filed charges of discrimination with the state or federal equal opportunity or civil rights commissions (NEOC, ICRC, EEOC). I also represent employers facing unfounded claims of discrimination in the workplace.

Firm Focus and History
Thompson Law Office has a general practice that focuses on serving the needs of individuals and small to mid-sized businesses in various areas. Including but not limited to bankruptcy, divorce, child custody, business law, employment law, unemployment benefits, estate planning, probate, and homeowners associations.
I founded Thompson Law Office in 2007. I had a vision for a revolutionary approach to the practice of law that prioritized the accessibility and affordability of quality legal counsel. The revolution has been driven by emerging technologies and a commitment to superior client service. The firm has grown quickly into one of West Omaha's largest law firms by recruiting and attracting attorneys with outstanding backgrounds that can provide quality professional legal advice. The legal professionals at Thompson Law Office represent a diverse group of talented individuals that provide a perspective built on experience in various areas of the law.
Previous Employment Summary
Prior to founding Thompson Law Office, I was a partner with a small law firm in Omaha with eight attorneys and an associate at another law firm representing Native American tribes. I also served as a registered lobbyist and offered public policy consulting on projects of particular concern to our clients for several years. Prior to practicing law and immediately after law school, I spent a year clerking for Justice John F. Wright with the Nebraska Supreme Court.
Activities and Awards
I was accepted for membership in the Robert M. Spire American Inns of Court, where I am currently a Barrister. I was named the Millard Business Association's 2008 Entrepreneur of the Year.
What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
Having an informed client makes our representation more effective and demonstrates a client's commitment to the cause. I strive to educate our clients on legal issues while encouraging them to be engaged in the process and seek answers to their legal questions.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
Under appropriate circumstances I will review client-prepared documents and make suggestions in the interest of cost-effective legal services.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
I recognize that some disputes do not justify an attorney appearing in court and will work with "pro se" clients who choose to represent themselves in court. In fact, in Nebraska's small claims courts, parties are not allowed to have attorneys. Oftentimes I can assist after a client is awarded a judgment by taking steps to collect on the judgment or "garnish" or "execute" on the judgment debtor's property.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
I was drawn to the legal profession by my desire to shape the world we live in and have a meaningful impact on the lives of those in my community.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
My perspective is uniquely informed by my experience clerking for judges at both the trial and appellate levels. This experience, bolstered by my tenure as Senior Articles Editor for the Iowa Law Review, allowed me to further refine my analytical research and writing skills. My diverse background in both transactional and litigation matters has left me "as comfortable in the courtroom as in the boardroom."
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
I primarily engage in civil litigation, which is resolving disputes between private parties in court. The types of dispute may differ, but the process of dispute resolution is often the same. I am attracted to the challenge of achieving outcomes in contentious disputes that have eluded others, which requires a deliberate approach to advocating effectively while managing information, time, and personalities.
What do you like best about your career?
I feel that my practice has a meaningful impact on the lives of my clients, and I find this to be rewarding. Although our legal system is far from perfect, I enjoy finding a way to "solve" the legal problems that my clients may be facing.
Tell us about your law firm:
I have worked hard to assemble an exceptional team of attorneys, paralegals and law clerks that complement each other and are all dedicated to a revolutionary approach to the practice of law.
What are your strengths and style?
I am self-confident and am not intimidated by others. I am not afraid to take a second look at tough cases and argue a point to the very end if I am convinced that my client is in the right. My diverse background has helped me see the "big picture" and provide advice that is both practical and legal advice.
Personal Interests:
I am a family man and strive to achieve a healthy balance between a successful law practice and a successful family. I enjoy jazz music, architecture, classic cars, long-distance cycling, and outdoors activities.

Fixed-Price Services and Fees
In the employment context, I generally offer my clients a choice of three different billing options: hourly, contingency, or a hybrid arrangement where the client pays hourly up to a particular dollar amount and then it converts to a contingency fee. This depends on the circumstances of the case though. I accept all major credit cards.
Hourly Rates
• $145 to $275 for attorneys
• $75 to $125 for paralegals and legal assistants
• $35 to $55 for law clerks
Free Initial Consultation?
I offer all of my prospective clients a free "meet and greet." It is a 15 minute meeting with an attorney where you can learn more about my firm, my qualifications, and experience. I also offer a consultation for up to an hour, which lets me learn more about your particular situation and provide responsible advice to you about your legal rights and obligations. I do charge a fee for this consultation, but it is generally a discounted flat fee which is dependent on the type of case. In employment cases, the fee is $150.
Typical Retainer
Retainers vary depending on the circumstances of each case, but they are typically between $1,000 and $2,500.
Nolo's Licensing Check
Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the state agency that licenses lawyers upon joining the directory.
Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any state licensing agency.
