Example Cases
My clients are generally well-meaning, honest people who have found that circumstances like job loss, real estate market crash, illness, or divorce have caused a drastic change in the type of life they were living - causing the household bills to spiral out of control. Occasionally, it may be the case that a certain financial choice turned out to be a poor one and it tipped the client over the edge. In any case, I use the bankruptcy code to reorganize their financial lives and help them get a fresh start.

Firm Focus and History
After spending many years managing the largest consumer bankruptcy firm in the country, I knew that bigger is not always better. I wanted to finally run a business my way, in which service and quality work product is not sacrificed in the pursuit of business growth and the almighty dollar. I have expanded the practice to include another attorney, paralegal, and managing director that share my goal of always putting the current clients first.
I opened the firm in 2009 with the goal of creating a comfortable, boutique personal bankruptcy law office that makes clients feel more like they are at a spa than a law office.
Previous Employment Summary
I went to law school so that I could pursue a career in public interest. My activities and internships centered on this focus, and I chose Chicago Legal Clinic and Cook County Legal Assistance Foundation as my first work experiences so that I could help provide low-cost legal services to individuals. I never had an interest in working in a corporate environment in which I worked for a faceless, soulless corporate entity. Helping real people had always been my goal, and these experiences were fulfilling and instructive.
I continued working at Chicago Legal Clinic after law school, where I learned what an honor it is to represent poor people and give them legal representation that they may not have otherwise. My help mainly focused on family law, real estate, and bankruptcy work.
In the following year, after my admission to the Illinois bar, I joined what is now Macey & Aleman dba Legal Helpers PC. I wanted to continue to help individuals directly while focusing on just one area of the law where I could become an expert, bankruptcy. My time there solidified my decision that I much prefer to protect consumers rather than creditors in legal battles. There, I wore practically every hat possible. I started out speaking to thousands of clients from across the country over the phone, and handling intake appointments for several hundred new clients. I personally filed thousands of consumer bankruptcy matters. I quickly stepped up to managing the other attorneys and support staff in the Chicago office.
After several years, I managed national operations along with the partners, in which I hired, trained, and managed the outlying offices. I was the liaison between office managers in over 20 locations and the partners. Additionally, I spent several years managing all of the Cook County bankruptcy litigation and Chapter 13 matters for the firm.
What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
The more people know about legal issues, the better they are able to protect themselves. Nolo is a great source of material for consumers to learn about their legal rights. I take the time to explain legal issues to my clients in a way that they can easily understand, and give them full answers when they want a better understanding of the process. Non-attorneys often do more harm than good when they educate themselves and apply the law ineffectively. It is best to consult with an attorney. Clients often walk through my door with many misunderstandings about the bankruptcy process and its effects. I take the time to correct these myths.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
I will, of course, review anything that my client brings me and give advice accordingly. Whatever time a client takes to prepare documents can only help them. When a client hires me, however, they must trust that I have the education and background to give them the best advice, and the documents they prepared may not be what we ultimately use. We are not a document review service. We could, however, be willing to work on a related matter for a client for a few hours, in an attempt to resolve small issues in an efficient and cost effective manner.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
I coach potential clients that call in all the time, when bankruptcy does not seem to be the best or first option amongst those calling in with financial stress. I instruct my staff to make sure they have fully advised potential clients on methods of avoiding bankruptcy if that does not seem like the best solution. Usually this involves support for self help. If it makes more sense for someone to handle a matter by themselves pro se, I tell them! I am always willing to help point people in the direction of resources and knowledge.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
I know it sounds like a cliché, but I knew at a very early age that I wanted to be an attorney, in order to help the common man. I knew that many people are victimized by the laws that are meant to protect them, and by corporate interests, and are unaware of the nuances of these laws. I felt that far too many people do not have the means to protect themselves, and I wanted to play a part in protecting them. I feel like I still do that today.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
My experience in speaking to and in helping thousands of bankruptcy clients has enabled me to have the ability to cut through the intricacies of each new difficult financial situation, so that I can easily break the situation down for my clients and spot potential issues. I have learned what questions to ask and how to identify incomplete or dishonest explanations.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
I enjoy providing a clear and concise solution for consumers facing financial hardship, through bankruptcy. This area of the law was a natural progression from my general goals of helping people. Bankruptcy is a powerful tool for individuals whose homes are about to be foreclosed, whose wages are being garnished, who are depressed from creditor harassment, are losing their car, or are having trouble moving on in life due to poor credit. I have a sympathetic ear and can help change my clients' lives!
What do you like best about your career?
I love witnessing clients better their lives by removing stress, eliminating debt and creditor harassment, protecting assets, and improving credit. It makes me happy to see hope return to my clients faces, and tears of despair replaced by tears and smiles of joy and peace. I am proud to have always represented the common man and never a corporate interest.
