Firm Focus and History
My firm's focus is on estate planning, real estate transactions (commercial and residential), representation of small businesses, and landlord representation in landlord/tenant matters.
I started practice as a solo practitioner in the early 1980s. Since then my firm has grown to its current structure. In January of 2008, my long time associates Michael Riffkin and Rena Strauss and I joined forces to create Grant, Riffkin & Strauss, P.C.
Previous Employment Summary
I have been actively employed as an attorney since graduating from law school.
Activities and Awards
Founder of the Rotary Club of Potomac Maryland.
What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
It is important to stay informed and active in pursuing your intended goal. Although it is helpful if my clients have educated themselves regarding their specific legal issue, I pride myself in being able to explain their situations and options, spending enough time while doing so to ensure that they are fully informed and I have met their needs.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
Although I am willing to review documents prepared by clients, it has been my experience that it is more cost effective for me to create the documents.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
If my representation or firm's representation of a client is not cost effective, the best course of action is for the client to represent themselves. If this is the case, I will fully support my client and help them obtain their desired outcome.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
I have a business and accounting background which I wanted to put to use in a practical way to support individuals and businesses.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
As both an attorney and a CPA, I am uniquely qualified to provide advice regarding estate planning. I am also able to offer my guidance to my clients about how to structure and run their business to be as successful as possible.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
I enjoy helping people create and ensure their legacy. This, in conjunction with my financial background naturally lends itself to counseling my clients with their estate planning needs, counseling on issues surrounding their businesses, and assisting with the purchase and sale of real estate. As an attorney in a small firm I have the unique opportunity to build long-term client relationships.
What do you like best about your career?
Having the opportunity to meet scores of interesting people and help counsel them with their issues.
Tell us about your law firm:
The strength of my firm is evidenced by the experience and knowledge of my staff. We have an open relationship and dialog which allows us to collaborate and help each other therefore providing our clients with the best possible legal services available.
What are your strengths and style?
I like to lead by example. My theory is that I am not willing to ask someone to do something that I am not willing to do myself. I therefore keep a close eye on all associate and legal assistant work and I am fully aware of all matters taking place in my office.
